About MAGGIE

Adoption Fee: $100
Australian Kelpie mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

This is Maggie! I promise that she is one of the most unique dogs you will ever meet. We found Maggie as a stray about a year and a half ago. She had no training, besides being housebroken, so we taught her all her obedience. We found that Maggie is an extremely intelligent animal and picked up quickly on tricks and commands. She loves to learn and is *highly* motivated by play. She is also an excellent agility dog! I have trained her to jump on and off of objects and she follows when I run. It's difficult to write this post because Maggie is our extremely beloved family dog. My husband, stepdaughter, and I love this dog to death. She is an excellent family companion. Maggie lives to please, gets along so well with our cats (and any other cat she meets that will let her get close). We, however, are quite social and found that even though she loves and trusts our family, most strangers, especially children, make her very uneasy. She becomes quick friends with adults who are EXPERIENCED with dogs, but most individuals rub her the wrong way and she tries to 'correct' them by nipping as her herding instinct is quite strong. Our child is 8 years old and cannot easily bring friends over because we are afraid that Maggie may try to herd them, nip them, or in the worst cases, even bite. She has never bitten anyone, but because of her rescue status, we are extra cautious. We are quite social but cannot bring Maggie to any events either because of her sensitivity. If we had the resources, we would put Maggie in extensive training to help with some of her behaviors, but our family simply does not have the time nor money to do so. **The ideal family for Maggie would be a single or couple with no children who loves to train and rehab dogs and who has some land that she can run freely on.** There is a potential that she could live with other dogs, and she does pretty well with dogs when she's off leash, however she fancies herself 'dominant' and gets into power struggles with some older dogs. We try to schedule semi-regular playdates for Maggie to get her used to other dogs. Please call of email me with any questions about this spectacular dog. We really, really want to find a safe and loving home for her. Again, our hearts are broken to have come to this decision, but it is the right one for Maggie and our family. :(
