CODE RED- VERY SWEET PETITE YOUNG CHOW- NOW RESCUE ONLY FOR BEING INITIALLY SHY. DOG FRIENDLY-SEE VIDEO AT RISK IN FULL SHELTER -FAIRFIELD, CA (N CAL)- Solano County Animal Care ID #A315769 'COALTON' - Dog friendly, see video link COALTON CAN BE EUTHANIZED IN THE NEAR FUTURE FOR SPACE, IF NO FOSTER/RESCUE STEPS UP. RESCUES NEED FOSTERS- CAN ANYONE HELP? IF INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, we will do our best to connect you w/ a rescue, but we need a foster to step up asap to find a Rescue to save him in time! pls dm or email w/ serious interest. We are in urgent need of finding a foster or foster to adopt, for this handsome but neglected male chow who ended up at the county kill shelter as a stray, after being brought in to the North Bay HS after roaming. We have named him Coalton, & the county shelter has estimated he is 2 years young. We were told by original shelter (North Bay HS) that he is a 'Very sweet dog, under two years old, good overall temperament. Also very petite, around 40 pounds'. He was transferred to the larger county shelter who just took in a seizure case as well, & is now overwhelmed. Unfortunately, because he was initially shy, Coalton has now been designated as Rescue only despite showing no aggression, taking treats gently, & being calm when walked past other dogs on a leash. He also did fine on his dog to dog test and can be seen here in video: https://youtube.com/shorts/Rh6C7lCnPQI?feature=share Rescue only means only a rescue group can save him & pull him out of the shelter. However, Rescue groups need fosters, or someone interested to foster to adopt as they need a place for him to go. More detailed Shelter notes indicate, 'At this time the dog is not adoptable to the general public and is rescue only A04, A315769: The trainer recommends this dog for rescue only at this time. The dog presented with marked FAS on first approach (standing against the kennel door, barking while staring at the trainer), with some improvement observed throughout the assessment in sociability. However, the dog expressed marked sensitivities/aversions to handling and petting, especially initial interactions. Some improvement observed, but remained weary of more direct/forward/overhead approaches to handling (freezing, staring, lip licking, side-eye glances). High affinity for treats & tolerated leashing after a few treats were given kennelside - readily walked out of the kennel & into the open leash loop. Remained soft-neutral around neighboring dogs in passing, moderate pulling on leash. The dog explored the yard area independently, initially did not approach the trainer freely or when recalled (began approaching within about 10 minutes); but would follow the trainer from a short distance as she walked around the yard. The dog took treats gently & consistently (high affinity for treats). Appeared notably weary to direct approaches & touching/handling-exhibited acute freezing of the face/body (including sudden cessation of panting), lip licking, staring (some side-eye whites of eyes exposed), slight lowering of the head, disengaging once handling stopped. The dog exhibited some improvement over time (softening when handling, brief reengagements by leaning or curling body back into the trainer), but regressed to freezing/tensing/staring with more direct/forward and overhead approaches. Exhibited brief softer and quieter sniffing along fencing with the tester dog, and able to disengage and remain more neutral. No overt aggression, reactivity, offensive or fear-avoidant responses observed. The dog was relatively easy to return to the kennel and unleash - readily stepped back inside, remained soft-still for unleashing and did not exhibit immediate regression to previously observed kennelside responses (standing against kennel door, barking while staring at the trainer).' This shelter also made the last chow there Rescue only for similar reasons, and put him on a short deadline for euthanasia. Therefore, we are very concerned Coalton may meet the same fate. Please note a rescue only dog cannot be adopted directly from the shelter, but we will try to connect you to the shelter to do so, or a rescue group as needed to help if possible. If you are a responsible chow savvy home or can foster or foster to adopt, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, and can try to pair fosters or interested parties with a willing rescue group. Ideally, we need a foster near the shelter or in N Cal. Rescue groups and serious inquiries may also contact the shelter at [email protected] and [email protected] , please note ID and your interest in the subject line.
