This momma dog is now known in our rescue circle of people as Saint Gemma since she was a mother to 3 litters at once! She came to us hugely pregnant in August with burned pads on her feet because she had been wandering the streets so long looking for a safe place to have her babies. She gave birth to 9 healthy puppies a few days after her arrival. Immediately her foster mom knew she was a special and attentive mother. So when an animal control officer called a week later about finding a motherless litter of puppies still with umbilical cords attached, we offered them to Gemma. She immediately started cleaning and mothering them and let them nurse alongside her own. Now a month later, after her first litter started weaning over to goat milk and some solid food, we got another call from a neighboring county animal control officer about yet ANOTHER litter of puppies 2 days old in a basket. Once again Gemma jumped into action to clean and nursed this 3rd litter like they were her own. Her foster mom says it was like watching a miracle. Now she had a large pen with partitions she could hop over to visit each litter. And her foster mom helped keep her healthy with multiple feedings of choice foods several times a day. And between the shared efforts of Gemma and her foster mom, they were able to save 20 puppies!! Gemma is now done feeding her babies and spayed and ready for her forever family. Boy does she deserved the cushiest life! She is a very affectionate dog who loves couch cuddles and loves walks on leash. She is good with kids and is curious about cats but usually leaves them alone. We'd like to see her forever home have a 6ft fenced yard to keep her safe.
