About Cork

Adoption Fee: $100
Australian Cattle Dog / Siberian Husky
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Cork (also known as Chicken, Noodle, and Dude) is an estimated 8-year-old, 35-pound 'super mutt,' mostly Australian Cattle Dog. He has one brown eye and one blue eye (heterochromia) and a tan heart-shaped marking on his backside, which feels about right for a dog with this much love to give. We adopted Cork seven years ago, and he has been my best friend ever since. He's my velcro dog. With the people he loves, he's a true shadow and a big cuddler/snuggle bug. He'll follow you from room to room and wants nothing more than to lie next to 'his person.' His favorite thing in the world is going for walks and sniffing everything around him. He also loves hikes, camping, playing fetch, and veggie scraps from the kitchen. He hates swimming, but he's good for baths and grooming. Training and manners Cork is very well trained: 1. House-broken and doggy-door trained 2. Obedience trained, including off-leash recall. We have a full list of his commands available upon request. 3. Place trained 4. E-collar and bark-collar trained 5. Knows some tricks (sit, stay, lay down, high five) and loves to 'give hugs' 6. Technically crate trained and can be crated if needed, though he has free-roamed for the last three of his seven years with us thanks to the doggy door 7. Doesn't chew anything he isn't allowed to 8. Stays off human beds and couches Health Cork is microchipped and up to date on vaccines, dental cleanings, and wellness exams. He is neutered. He doesn't take any medications and has no special dietary needs. What Cork needs Cork is a 'go slow' dog. We believe he was abused by his previous owners before we adopted him, and he lives with fear-based anxiety. He needs time to warm up to new people and new environments, and he can be unpredictable. He has boundaries, and we respect them. We'd ask the same of his new family. Please read these carefully: 1. No children. Our family is growing, and more than one trainer has advised us that we cannot safely have children in a home with Cork. This is the only reason we're rehoming him. 2. He needs time with strangers before he's comfortable. 3. He should not go to public places (restaurants, crowded spaces) without a muzzle. 4. He resource guards 'his people.' He has a herding instinct. 5. He sometimes has leash reactivity via jumping, but he rarely barks. Other animals Cork has lived with his dog sister, Kona, for seven years, and they are best friends. He's fine with other dogs and is able to go to the dog park. When we travel, he stays at a sitter's home where he free-roams with other dogs and does well there. He has never been around cats, but we suspect he would do fine with them. His ideal home An active single person or couple with no children, a fenced-in backyard, and a doggy door (not required). Another dog in the home is fine. Bonus points if you love hiking and camping as much as he does. Adoption process 1. Foster-to-adopt preferred. Because Cork needs time to warm up, we'd like to arrange a few visits first with interested pet parents to make sure it's a good fit for everyone involved. 2. $100 rehoming fee to help keep him safe. Will be donated back to the shelter once received. 3. If you ever have regrets, Cork can come back to us, and we'll find the right path for him. He cannot go back to a shelter under any circumstances. He is not built for it and would likely be euthanized surrounded by people he doesn't know, and I cannot let that happen. 4. If you're willing, I would love to visit him from time to time. I understand that is a tough sell, but I would love the opportunity to stay in his life in some way. A note from me Cork is a wonderful dog, and I wish I could keep him. We love him very much, and I'm so sorry I'm having to do this. I'm looking for someone serious who will take care of him and give him the patience, structure, and love he deserves. I'm happy to talk with anyone who is interested, so please reach out with any questions.
