LOCAL ADOPTION ONLY - Within a one hour drive to Pensacola Florida. JAX is a 5 year old, 14.8 pound Shih Tzu who was originally surrendered to us because his family could not take care of him. He was in very rough shape but still the sweetest boy! JAX is a wonderful dog who loves his people and wants to be close to them as much as possible so we would like to find him a home where someone is around most of the time. When his person does leave, he will quietly lie by the door and wait for them to come back. He loves being on laps, attention and being petted. His foster has discovered that brushing him while giving him love is the perfect combination for loving on him. JAX does well with the other small dogs in his foster home, although he prefers his fur siblings to respect his personal space and will let them know if they don't. He will play with toys for a few minutes at a time and likes to chase after the other dogs when they get the zoomies. He may sound very serious while doing it, but his wagging tail gives him away. For him to be truly happy, he should have a home with a small, low-key dog as a companion. We do not know how he would be with kids. He chases cats. His house training continues to be a work in progress. JAX will use a potty pad but does mark furniture, so belly bands are a must while his new family continues working with him. He needs someone who will take him out on a regular schedule, walk with him, and provide plenty of positive reinforcement. He does not like to go outside without his person so if you have a dog door and expect him to use it on his own, you might want to rethink that. He wants you to go with him while he does his business. JAX absolutely must have a home with a secure fenced yard. If he can get through a fence, he will, and he has also been known to bolt through a front door if he has an opportunity. He does well on outings and enjoys all the attention and pets he receives. He is also a very observant passenger in the car and keeps a close eye on all potential threats. At home, he watches TV and barks at the critters appearing on the screen. Storms do not seem to bother him, he eats well, and he loves treat time. At night, JAX does great sleeping in bed with no accidents. JAX was returned to us after seizure activity was reported by his previous adopters. There were four episodes over approximately five months, three of which were mild enough that it was unclear whether they were actually seizures. Although JAX had been evaluated and tested, no underlying cause was identified, and we had not witnessed any seizure activity ourselves until recently. After six weeks in his current foster home without an incident, JAX experienced a seizure that his foster mom saw. This gave us the information needed to move forward with treatment, and he was started on phenobarbital. Since beginning medication, he has experienced only one minor seizure lasting approximately 15 to 20 seconds. His medication takes time to reach a therapeutic level, so additional episodes may occur during that adjustment period. JAX currently takes phenobarbital twice daily. It is very important that he receive his medication consistently without missing doses. The medication costs approximately $22.31 for a supply lasting a little over three months through his veterinarian's online pharmacy. His future family should be prepared for him to remain on phenobarbital, although his vet may adjust his treatment based on continued observation and evaluation. His adopter must be committed to giving his medication consistently and providing the ongoing monitoring and veterinary care he needs. JAX is neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *To meet or adopt one of our dogs, you must first submit an adoption application for review.
