BUDDY BOY - SOMEBODY'S MISSING FAMILY MEMBER 9-Year-Old Coonhound Mix . Male (Neutered) . 56 lbs. Animal ID: IEPA-A-19137 Location: Friends of Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, CA Intake Date: May 24, 2026 Some dogs are looking for a home. Buddy Boy is looking for his family. Imagine one of those movies where a terrible storm has destroyed a family's home. A dog comes running toward a firefighter, desperately trying to lead him back to the ruins to rescue someone he loves. That's the kind of dog Buddy Boy makes you think of. Or imagine a family evacuating before a hurricane. Suddenly, one of the children cries, 'Where's Buddy Boy?' And Dad immediately turns around to find him, because nobody is leaving without Buddy Boy. That's the kind of place Buddy Boy deserves in someone's life. Not simply a pet, but a beloved member of the family. THE HAPPIEST LITTLE DANCE: Buddy Boy is nine years old, although you would never guess it from his playful personality and enthusiasm for life. Every time his favorite volunteers approach his kennel, Buddy Boy performs an adorable little dance, marching in place with all four paws. It means two things: 'I'm so happy to see you!' and 'Please hurry, I really need to go outside!' Buddy Boy is exceptionally housetrained. Even after months at the shelter, he continues to keep his kennel remarkably clean, patiently waiting for someone to take him outside. And once he's outside, the fun begins! TWO TENNIS BALLS AND ENDLESS HAPPINESS: Buddy Boy absolutely LOVES fetch. He could play for hours, and he has developed his own clever system: you need TWO balls! He won't surrender the ball in his mouth until you throw another one. Then the game continues, and so does his happiness. He also loves water, sunshine, exploring the park, and following fascinating scent trails with his wonderful Coonhound nose. And when he spots a squirrel? That's when you get to witness something extraordinary. Buddy Boy freezes, his tail becomes perfectly straight, and his entire body points toward his discovery. His hunting instincts are unmistakable. During these observed moments, rather than lunging, he has patiently watched, almost as if waiting for permission. He's intelligent, curious, eager to learn, and wonderfully entertaining. A DOG EVERYBODY LOVES: Buddy Boy has become a volunteer favorite, especially for Kelly and Lonna, who visit him not only to take him outside but because they genuinely enjoy spending time with him. Kelly says: 'He is always happy, does a little happy dance when I see him. Loves to play ball! I think he would do great in a home with kids to play with. Definitely potty trained.' Lonna describes him as: 'Buddy is such a gentle, affectionate soul. He loves people and is so happy just to spend time with you.' She also admires how patiently he waits in his kennel without barking, jumping, or demanding attention. Buddy Boy is affectionate, sociable, treat-motivated, and knows basic commands. He enjoys human companionship and would love an active home where he can continue playing, exploring, and being part of everyday family life. IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW: Buddy Boy can be selective with other dogs. Although he has shown no reactivity toward dogs encountered during park visits and neighborhood walks, his compatibility with another dog has not been established. Careful evaluation and introductions would be essential. He has a high prey drive and has not been tested with cats. A home without cats or small animals would be the safer choice. Buddy Boy also requires special attention regarding toys and bedding. He tears apart blankets and stuffed toys and may swallow the pieces, so these items must not be left with him. Even rubber toys should only be used under direct supervision. His affectionate nature and good manners could make him a wonderful companion for first-time dog owners who understand these needs. NINE YEARS YOUNG. A LIFETIME OF LOVE TO GIVE: There is something deeply touching about Buddy Boy. Perhaps it's his joyful little dance. Perhaps it's watching him run after tennis balls with the enthusiasm of a puppy. Or perhaps it's simply the way he makes people feel when they're around him. Buddy Boy has all the qualities of a dog who should be sleeping peacefully in a family home, enjoying sunny afternoons, playing in the backyard, and being loved beyond measure. He doesn't need to learn how to become somebody's best friend. He already knows how. He just needs somebody to give him the chance. Because Buddy Boy isn't just another senior dog waiting in a shelter. He's somebody's missing family member. Come meet Buddy Boy at Friends of Upland Animal Shelter in Upland, California, and discover why so many volunteers have fallen in love with this extraordinary boy.
