Pippin is a rescue who was found as a stray. He's affectionate, funny, and bonds hard to his person. He plays fetch and tug with real enthusiasm, and he has the endearing habit of carrying a toy to the back door mid-game to suggest the fun would be even better outside. He loves belly rubs and rarely accepts pets without twisting around and flopping onto your feet. When excited, he hops around on his hind legs and gets playfully mouthy. His talents include pirouetting for treats, running so fast he skids out, attempting mid-air 360s (rarely sticking the landing), stretching when he's happy, greeting you like a war hero after you take out the trash, croaking and groaning like an old man, and a killer panda impersonation (he eats leaves). THE HONEST PART: The right home is one that knows what it's taking on. Outdoors and on leash, he's a different dog: he freezes when people appear at a distance and barks and lunges at other dogs, so walks will need real work. He's mostly housetrained, but I still supervise backyard trips, and he wakes me a few nights a week to go out. He gets extremely upset when separated from his person, so someone home most of the day is ideal. Car rides scare him, he needs sedation for vet procedures (his clinic has a protocol that works), and outside noises can wind him up for a while. He's wary of visitors but usually warms up within 15 minutes, though he may nip if picked up by someone he doesn't know, so it's best to let him come to you. HE'D THRIVE WITH: someone home much of the day who's willing to gently build his independence; a patient person committed to positive-reinforcement training; a calm home and neighborhood; a secure yard (a big plus); and someone who takes vet care seriously. He's best as an only dog for now, though I'd consider a very careful introduction to a calm resident dog. WHY HE'S BEING REHOMED: I adopted him hoping for a dog who could travel easily between two households and be relaxed around people and dogs. It's become clear that Pippin needs more behavioral work and a home whose daily life fits a very attached little dog better than mine does. I love him to pieces, and finding the right home matters far more to me than finding one quickly. Because he's so bonded to me, I'd like to take it slow: visits first, then gradually more overnights until you're both sure. I know it's unusual, but I'm trying to do right by him.
