Peeper is a 6-7-year-old Chihuahua who came into rescue alongside her fellow amphibian-themed companions, Newt and Lily, after their elderly owner entered a care facility. With their world suddenly turned upside down, these little dogs found themselves needing a fresh start, and Peeper has been taking her time figuring out exactly what this new chapter is all about. Peeper is a shy little lady who prefers to observe before participating. She isn't one to immediately throw herself into the arms of a stranger, and earning her trust takes a little patience. But once she decides you're one of her people? Congratulations! You've unlocked an incredibly sweet, affectionate little cuddle bug who thoroughly enjoys being close to her humans. Now, somewhere along the way, Peeper apparently decided she had been elected the unofficial Neighborhood Block Captain. We aren't entirely sure who held the election or whether there were any other candidates, but she takes her responsibilities VERY seriously. The yappy Dachshunds across the street have apparently been identified as a public nuisance, and Peeper feels personally obligated to respond to their daily announcements. Fortunately, she redirects fairly easily when reminded that neighborhood security is not actually her responsibility. We're considering revoking her imaginary badge. Outside of her volunteer law enforcement career, Peeper is a pretty easygoing little companion. She walks fairly well on a leash, tolerates car rides reasonably well, and absolutely LOVES her crate. It's her personal little sanctuary, and she appreciates having a comfortable space to retreat to when she needs some quiet time. She also enjoys the occasional grass salad, although we have yet to determine whether she's grazing recreationally or simply expanding her culinary horizons. Peeper has been doing wonderfully with the other dogs and cats in rescue. While she needs a little extra time to warm up to new people and environments, she's proving to be a genuinely lovely little dog once she feels secure. Her journey hasn't been entirely smooth, though. Peeper arrived with an injured eye and a hernia, both of which required veterinary attention. Her hernia has been repaired, her eye has received treatment, and we're happy to report that she's healing well! She's also shed a little extra weight along the way. Her eye continues to improve, although her recovery isn't quite finished. She will need a family willing to continue any necessary care and follow-up as she completes her healing process. Why Peeper will steal your heart: * Sweet, affectionate, and loves to cuddle once comfortable * Good with other dogs and cats * Walks fairly well on a leash * Does reasonably well during car rides * Absolutely loves her crate * Responds well to redirection * Making wonderful progress with her medical recovery * Comes with extensive, completely unsolicited neighborhood surveillance experience Peeper isn't the kind of dog who will necessarily win you over in the first five minutes. She's the kind who makes you earn her trust, then rewards your patience with the sweetest little personality. She needs someone who understands that adjusting to a new home takes time and who will give her the space, reassurance, and consistency she needs to feel safe. At 6-7 years young, Peeper has plenty of love left to give, a whole lot of cuddles waiting for the right person, and apparently an entire neighborhood to supervise. We're hoping her forever family will convince her that retirement from neighborhood patrol is a perfectly acceptable career move. If interested in meeting and potentially adopting, please read the adoption requirements and complete the adoption application located at forbellessake.org. Once processed and approved a meet and greet can be scheduled and if a match an adoption can be finalized at that time. FBS standard adoption fee is $175. All residents are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for any known medical needs. Breeds are best guess. Housetraining is not guaranteed but crate training is worked on with all residents. A secure physically fenced yard is prioritized if a yard is present. Temperament cannot be and is not guaranteed.
