About Boe

English Setter
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Boe is a 7-year-young English Setter and, in his North Texas foster home, he is becoming the beloved lap dog he was always meant to be. He found his way to SWESR when his owner in Oklahoma could no longer care for him, his sister Roz and his mother Cassie, both rescued with him. Boe has proven the '3 days, 3 weeks' rescue dog acclimation rule entirely true, making steady progress towards being a house dog in his foster home. He has shown no signs of previous abuse, fear, or separation anxiety, and he is ready to find his forever family. Boe is a certified sweetheart, an absolute 'lover,' and a true 'Velcro' dog. Like a typical sensitive ES, Boe's feelings are on full display and he loves nothing more than crawling right up onto the couch to melt into your lap or get full-body pets. While he enjoys furniture privileges, he is respectful; if you tell him 'no' or ask him to get down, he will happily curl up on the floor right next to you. Boe saves all of his typical Setter energy for the great outdoors; inside the house, he is calm, not-destructive, and does not bark at the doorbell, people, or noises. He is a fantastic houseguest who is treat-motivated and a quick learner. He comes running when you call his name and clap your hands. Because Boe spent his first seven years living outside, he is still perfecting his house manners. He is great in his crate-happily resting there for 2 to 4 hours during the day when his humans are gone and sleeping beautifully crated through the night. He has only had one true accident in 5 weeks, though he does still have an instinct to hike his leg and this happens less than once a day. He wears a belly band like a champ to prevent accidents, and he is consistently improving as he adapts to his new, structured indoor routine. Boe doesn't guard resources and he doesn't mind sharing food or toys with other dogs and he will happily swap and finish up bowls with his sister Roz when she is finished and allows him to share. When it's time to head outside, Boe turns on his true English Setter engine. He loves to self-exercise and with his foster parents nearby, he happily spends 4-6 hours a day enjoying the fresh air, patrolling the yard, and resting on the porch. He has even figured out how to use a doggie door that leads to a climate-controlled outside shop! He has shown no interest in climbing or jumping fences and has a low escape drive, though standard safety precautions keeping gates and doors closed should be taken since he can be curious and most Setters will happily take the opportunity for a 'run about' if given the opportunity. Boe's prey drive is medium/typical for a field ES and he is endlessly amused by the little things, whether he is 'hunting' frogs near the pool, tracking crickets in the mulch, or running through the grass to stir up the birds. While he isn't fond of swimming, he did accidentally fall into the pool early on and was successfully taught how to find the stairs, and he can now safely navigate his way out on his own. Boe is good in the car and a calm passenger with no history of car sickness. Boe is social and friendly with everyone he meets and he loves attention. He can often be found underfoot and between your legs. He recently enjoyed a party with 20 guests, as well as a 5-6 hour visit with grandchildren aged 16, 8, and 2, and he was completely engaged, gentle, and friendly with all of them. Boe is great with other dogs. He can be a bit submissive if another dog gets pushy. He has a blast engaging in energetic, friendly games of 'tag' through the open fence line with the neighbor's Vizsla, Golden Doodle, and German Shepherd. Cats are unknown but Boe's mother Cassie has proven to be cat safe, and they lived on the same property his entire life. Boe would make a good first English Setter for a family new to the breed. While we think he would be content as an only dog (provided he gets plenty of human attention) or with a dog of a similar personality, he is already a wonderful dog match with his sister Roz who is in the same foster home. They can be adopted separately, but our preference is to adopt them together; they love each other and it would be great for them to transition to their forever home together. They will make a wonderful bonded pair for a lucky adopter looking for an instant family and twice the love. Boe is looking for a home with a yard where he has plenty of room to run and self-exercise. He is in a foster home with a one acre fenced, setter-interesting yard so he gets plenty of daily exercise and doesn't currently need daily walks. In his forever home it will be important that he has the opportunity for plenty of daily exercise, whether it is a large and interesting fenced yard or a medium sized yard and daily walks. Boe is fully vetted, microchipped, current on vaccinations and tests. He still needs to gain some weight. He is a truly special soul who is ready to bring a lifetime of affection to his forever home.
