OBERON - THE GENTLE GIANT WHO MAKES THE WORLD SLOW DOWN Neapolitan Mastiff Mix - Male (Neutered) - 6 Years Old - 123+ lbs. Upland Animal Shelter - Upland, California. Animal ID: IEPA-A-19574. At the shelter since August 8, 2026 Some dogs make you smile. Some make you laugh. And then there are dogs like Oberon, who make the entire world seem to slow down. At first glance, Oberon can be intimidating. His enormous size, powerful build, cropped ears, and magnificent Mastiff face make quite an impression. But spend a few moments with him and you'll discover something completely different. Behind that imposing appearance lives one of the gentlest, calmest, most affectionate dogs you could ever hope to meet. Oberon is a giant in size and a gentleman at heart. There is something almost magical about being around him. Whether he's strolling peacefully through the play yard, chasing one of his enormous balls, or slowly approaching you for affection, everything he does seems to happen in beautiful slow motion. His movements are gentle and fluid. His personality is calm and joyful. When you're with Oberon, the noise of the world seems to fade away. Don't let his peaceful personality fool you, though. Oberon loves to play! Fetch is a favorite, especially with enormous balls nearly a foot in diameter. He also LOVES water. Drinking directly from the garden hose is great fun, and bath time may end with both Oberon and his human getting soaked! Oberon is intelligent, eager to please, housetrained, treat-motivated, and generally walks beautifully on leash. He knows several commands, including sit, down, paw, stay, and come. Despite his enormous mouth, he accepts treats remarkably gently. And then there's the affection. When Oberon approaches you with the slow confidence of a lion, you usually know what he wants: petting, ear scratches, belly rubs, a massage, or simply a comfortable place to rest that enormous head. He's basically a 140-pound lap dog who doesn't realize that laps have weight limits. And yes, he drools! Mastiff people understand. A little drool is a small price to pay for this much love. Oberon's extraordinary size does require responsible handling and giant-breed experience is strongly preferred. The shelter recommends children 13+. This isn't because Oberon has shown aggression toward children; his sheer size could accidentally overwhelm or knock over a small child. Oberon is not suitable for a home with cats. He has a high prey drive, especially toward squirrels and other small animals. He generally walks calmly beside his handler, but squirrels can suddenly remind you that there's a VERY powerful dog on the other end of the leash! An attentive handler who anticipates distractions and redirects him early is important. Oberon responds well to redirection. Dog compatibility testing is pending. He has shown no reactivity toward other dogs during walks, but that does not establish compatibility for living together. Because of his size and strength, careful evaluation is recommended before placement with another dog. Oberon is a staff and volunteer favorite, and one volunteer who knows him especially well admits something very simple: If circumstances allowed it, Oberon would already be living in his home. That's how special this dog is. Oberon isn't simply beautiful. He's an experience - an extraordinary combination of physical strength, tenderness, dignity, playfulness, and peace. Somewhere there is someone who will love his enormous size, wrinkled face, playful spirit, gentle heart, and yes, even his drool. Come meet Oberon. Offer him a treat. Play some fetch. Sit beside him and let him rest that enormous head in your lap. You may arrive looking for a dog. You may leave having found one of the greatest friendships of your life.
