Looking for the Right Home for Bowser - Bouvier des Flandres This is an extremely difficult decision for our family, but after considerable thought, we have decided that Bowser needs a home better suited to him and his needs. Bowser is an almost 7-year-old, AKC-registered male Bouvier des Flandres. He is intact, microchipped, licensed in Berrien County, Michigan, and approximately one year into his three-year rabies vaccination. He is very well house trained and is an excellent family companion. One of Bowser's greatest qualities is his love for children. He is exceptionally good with them and genuinely enjoys their company. We believe a family with children who wants a large, affectionate and devoted family dog could potentially be an excellent fit for him. Bowser is also friendly with other dogs and enjoys their company-occasionally with a little more enthusiasm than the other dog may have requested! He currently lives with another dog, and we have found that canine companionship is particularly helpful for him. Bowser does have separation anxiety, and we want any prospective family to know this from the beginning. His anxiety is specifically related to being separated from his people; he does not otherwise present as an anxious or nervous dog. We are his second family, and over the last few months we have found that his separation anxiety is considerably better when he has another dog for companionship. A home with another compatible dog and/or where someone is around much of the time would therefore be particularly desirable. He thrives on companionship and being part of the family. He is also remarkably resourceful when he decides he would rather be wherever his people are. When left alone, Bowser has become quite proficient at opening doors, to the point that we had to install an additional latch on ours. Apparently, despite being very well house trained, he remains convinced that he was born in a barn and sees little reason to close the door behind himself! Prospective owners should therefore be aware that secure doors and gates are important, particularly while he adjusts to a new home. The reason we are rehoming him is also important, and we want to be completely transparent about it. As our property has developed more into a small homestead, Bowser has demonstrated a strong prey drive toward poultry and smaller animals. We previously had difficulty keeping him away from our rabbits, and this past weekend, while we were away, he forced his way into what we believed was a secure chicken enclosure and killed both of our roosters. Because of this, Bowser should not be placed in a home with poultry, rabbits, or similar small animals. Bouviers are historically a cattle-driving and herding breed, and we have no reason from Bowser's behavior to believe that larger herd animals such as cattle, sheep or goats would necessarily present the same issue. However, Bowser has never been trained or worked as a herding dog, so any prospective owner with larger livestock would need to introduce and evaluate him appropriately. We do not know how Bowser behaves around cats, so his compatibility with cats is unknown. Bowser is not a bad dog. Quite the opposite. He is a very good dog whose instincts and needs simply no longer fit the environment our family is developing. We believe he would be much happier in a setting where his loyalty, companionship, excellent house manners and wonderful disposition with children are the qualities being asked of him. Because we are already Bowser's second family, it is especially important to us that his next home be his permanent home. We are not looking to simply hand him to the first person who responds. Finding the right family for him is considerably more important to us than finding a home quickly. Prospective homes should expect us to ask questions about their household, lifestyle and other animals. We would like everyone in the household to meet Bowser before making a final decision. If there is another dog in the home, we would strongly prefer for the dogs to meet as well to make sure their personalities are compatible. Rehoming fee: $450 The rehoming fee is intended to help ensure that inquiries come from people who are serious about providing Bowser with the right long-term home. His welfare and finding the right family are our priorities. Bowser is located in Berrien County, Michigan. If you believe your family and home might be a good fit for Bowser, please send us a private message and tell us a little about yourselves, your household, any other animals you have, and what a typical day for Bowser would look like in your home.
