About Dasha

Belgian Malinois mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Dasha's story started on the streets of Mexico. She and her 2 month old puppy were poisoned. She was brought to a foster where she spent the next five months learning that people, food and a home could be safe. Once Dasha trusts someone, she forms a very strong bond. She is affectionate, intelligent and incredibly responsive to her people. Dasha energy has been low to moderate. She enjoys leisurely walks, sniffing and exploring and is happy to relax afterward. She's house-trained and has demonstrated excellent manners in a home. With unfamiliar people, she can be cautious and observant. She is an exceptionally loving and devoted companion Dasha's Current Story: We want to share what we've learned about Dasha since she arrived in Oregon on September 28th 2026. Dasha lived successfully with 3 small dogs during her five months in foster care in Mexico. Her foster mom described her as gentle with them, and she shared her home and space with them without the behaviors we're currently seeing. After traveling to Portland, however, Dasha had an introduction with a large resident dog. She became extremely uncomfortable and displayed growling, a stiff body, raised hackles and lunging. Dasha's trainer reports that she is currently experiencing significant anxiety around confinement, particularly in a crate. She has also begun displaying reactive behavior toward other animals when separated from them by barriers and has shown concerning interest and reactivity toward cats. Her trainer believes the stress of confinement and continually needing to be separated from other animals may be contributing to her escalating stress and reactivity. At the same time, Dasha has demonstrated that simply seeing another dog does not automatically cause a reaction. On a quiet walk, she calmly passed a small dog and later walked approximately 300 feet behind a large dog without reacting. Dasha's behavior appears to be highly influenced by her environment, stress level and proximity to other animals. We aren't going to speculate about exactly why her behavior in Oregon looks different from the behavior in Mexico. We're going to listen to what Dasha is showing us now. For that reason, Dasha needs to be the only pet in her next home. No resident dogs and no cats. This isn't a dog who needs a home where someone plans to immediately 'socialize' her with lots of other animals. What Dasha needs right now is the opposite: stability, predictability, decompression and the opportunity to feel secure without constantly having to navigate other animals in her living space. Her Ideal Home... We are looking for someone patient and experienced who is willing to give Dasha time. Experience with shepherds, anxious dogs or behavior work would be a huge plus. Her ideal home would provide: 'ۢ No other pets 'ۢ A relatively calm, predictable household 'ۢ Children over 8 'ۢ Someone willing to give her plenty of time to decompress 'ۢ A home that can safely accommodate her without relying heavily on crating 'ۢ Someone willing to continue working with our professional trainer 'ۢ Someone who understands that Dasha should not be rushed into new situations or interactions with other animals. Now she needs stability. We're looking for someone who doesn't need Dasha to be a dog she isn't. Someone who can give her space. Someone who will continue her training. Someone who wants one dog to pour their love into. And someone willing to let Dasha finally exhale. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
