Bailey Mae is a beautiful, lovable mixed-breed dog who was previously identified as a Lab/Boxer mix but has many of the physical characteristics of a Black Mouth Cur. She is intelligent, energetic, affectionate and very loyal to her person. Bailey loves having tasks to do and does best with structure, clear expectations and activity. She would likely thrive with an experienced owner who has an active lifestyle and plenty of room for her to explore. Bailey has received extensive professional training, including a month-long stay-and-train program at a K9 training facility in Eustis. She responds well to basic commands and does particularly well when given structure and direction. Continuing to reinforce her training would be important in her new home. Bailey has lived peacefully with a cat for the past several years without any problems. Her exposure to other animals has otherwise been limited. As a young dog, she lived with her sister for approximately a year, but she has had very limited interaction with other dogs since then. Any introductions to other animals should therefore be handled carefully and gradually. Bailey can be extremely loving, playful and affectionate, but she is also strong-willed and protective and can display dominant or guarding behaviors. She can become fearful, anxious or agitated in certain situations, and when highly stressed or uncomfortable her behavior can become unpredictable. Bailey does have a bite history. Because of this, she needs an experienced, adult-only home with someone who understands canine behavior, can recognize her signals and is comfortable providing appropriate boundaries and management. A home without children would be best. Bailey currently takes veterinarian-prescribed gabapentin and trazodone to help manage anxiety/stress. Her veterinary records, medication information, training history and additional details about her behavior can be provided to a serious prospective adopter. This is an extremely difficult rehoming decision. Bailey has many wonderful qualities and a lot of love to give, but she needs an environment and an experienced person who can safely meet all of her needs. The goal is to find Bailey the right home-not simply any home-where she can have structure, activity, companionship and the opportunity to thrive.
