Archie needs immediate placement! Archie is a handsome, approximately 2-year-old, 55-pound English Red Coonhound mix/Beagle mix. He is learning that life can be pretty wonderful when you are surrounded by people who love you. When Archie first arrived in my home in early September, he was absolutely terrified. It took him nearly a full day just to venture past the doorway into the living room. But once he found his courage and realized he was safe, he never looked back. Watching his confidence grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of fostering him. Archie has clearly had some difficult experiences in his past. He was abandoned and appears to have suffered abuse, as evidenced by scars on his head and nose. He is still fearful of sudden hand movements and can be wary of strangers. But beneath that initial hesitation is an incredibly sweet, intelligent, and affectionate dog who is learning to trust again. He was initially afraid to get into a car, but now he absolutely loves car rides! Archie is remarkably gentle when taking treats, has excellent manners when it comes to having his nails trimmed and ears cleaned, and even has a favorite spot in the yard for doing his business. He is comfortable in a crate for short periods, is reliable off-leash in his current environment, and is happy sleeping in your bed or wherever you ask him to settle. One of Archie's most endearing quirks is what I call his little blessing. When he's near you, he will gently lift one paw and place it on you. He does it to people and even other dogs. It's his own sweet way of making contact. Archie currently lives with my senior pit bull mix, and they get along beautifully. He does well with other dogs, although he isn't necessarily looking for a canine playmate. I would not place him with cats at this time. He is also a naturally protective dog and will often join in when other dogs bark and tends to be cautious around unfamiliar people. Archie will need a patient adopter who understands that trust takes time and who will allow him to build confidence at his own pace. He responds best to gentle handling, consistency, and positive reinforcement. What Archie needs most is a person willing to see beyond his past. He will continue to blossom with someone who appreciates his intelligence, respects his boundaries, and understands that even the smallest steps forward are worth celebrating. Archie is neutered, vaccinated, and current on his rabies vaccination. He is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, which should be completed on October 14, 2026. He will also need several months of restricted activity following treatment to allow his body to recover safely. If you're interested in sweet Archie, please contact Julie on 919 624 0059
