About Riley

Riley will be six yrs old in December, he is in his prime. His mother was a German Shepherd, his sire is unknown. I love him dearly. I adopted him from a family the end of May. It was a young family with 6 yr old and 10 mo old children. And I was able to meet him with his family. He was very sweet and calm around the kids, and he came right up to me and let me pet him. He was extremely under weight. I could feel his ribs and spine. His coat was in poor condition and matted. He and his family lived in an apartment with a tiny yard. Their manager had changed the pet policies, and they needed to rehome him, and they were sad to have to do it. I was told he was very quiet and easygoing, that he didn't play, and didn't play with toys. After a week I let them know I wanted him, and was told I could have him for 24 hours to see how he did with me. I kept him! What amazed me the most was that he came with me willingly without looking back, and trying to go back to them. I started him on a good diet, and was able to gently un mat a couple areas. I took him to the vet. Previous owners told me he was neutered at 6 months and that was also the last time he received vaccinations. So my vet started the vaccination program and checked him out. She commented on weight (50 lbs) and lack of muscle tone. Took him to the groomer and they had to shave most of him due to mats. He is gorgeous now and weighs about 65 lbs. I have been going on long walks with him and taking him to the dog park which he thoroughly enjoys. He is a great traveler in the car. Does not get anxious, just lies down on the backseat. The difficulties he has, are due to him not being socialized. I have noticed he is very wary of men when at home, and at the dog park, and will bark at them. He likes kids when he is able to approach them, and get to know them. Not good with cats at all (will chase them). With me he is a sweetheart, a goofy boy who loves to play, retrieve his stuffed hedgehog, and my protector. He loves being outdoors. He lets me do his daily brushing to keep his coat glossy and mat free. I adopted him to help him. And he has bloomed into an amazing companion. I'll be 70 next year and Riley has now become too much dog for me. He walks ok on a leash, but does pull, he is crate trained. It is his safe place, and he sleeps in it. He does not jump on furniture or try to jump on the bed. He is always up for an adventure and he needs someone who will share in his adventures, love and care for him, and give him the good life he deserves.
