About Salma

Salma is a beautiful two year old, 10 pound Chihuahua who came to us from Craven Pamlico Animal Services Center in New Bern, North Carolina, after being surrendered from an informal breeding situation. Salma is a sensitive little girl and very much a Chihuahua person's Chihuahua. She tends to choose her person, bond closely, and regard unfamiliar people with considerable suspicion until they've proven themselves worthy! She can be nervous in new situations and isn't a dog who will necessarily march up and introduce herself to strangers. What Salma needs is patience. Give her time to observe, settle in and learn that she's safe, and allow the relationship to develop on her timetable rather than expecting instant affection. She does well with other dogs, which can be a wonderful source of familiarity and confidence for a shy dog. Salma has recently been spayed by our veterinarian and is ready to begin a completely different chapter of her life-one in which she isn't valued for producing puppies, but simply for being Salma. We think her best match will be an adopter experienced with Chihuahuas or similarly sensitive little dogs, who understands their wonderfully devoted but sometimes cautious nature and won't be discouraged if Salma needs time to decide that you're her person. Once you've been admitted to the inner circle, however, being somebody's chosen person is one of the great privileges of living with a Chihuahua.
