About Helios

Helios - Great Dane, almost 2 years old, neutered male Helios is an incredibly loving, goofy and deeply affectionate Great Dane who bonds very strongly with his person. He isn't just a dog who likes being around his owner-he genuinely seems to care about how his person is feeling and wants to be close to them. He is incredibly affectionate and loves cuddling and being part of everyday life. One of the moments that best describes Helios happened when his owner was having an especially difficult day and was crying in bed. Helios climbed into bed with her and spent the day beside her, licking her face and tears and simply staying close to her. That's very much who Helios is with the person he loves. He can be silly, playful and incredibly sweet, and when he's comfortable and feels safe, he's an amazing companion. He currently lives with other dogs and loves his canine family as well. His owner describes him as an amazing dog when they're together, which is what makes finding him another home such an incredibly difficult decision. Helios also has significant behavioral needs and a human bite history, so this is not a typical rehoming situation. His loving personality does not erase those risks, and his history will be completely disclosed. Helios has been evaluated by Penn Vet Behavior Medicine and diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, resource guarding and fear-related aggression. His anxiety can cause him to become highly aroused around certain triggers, and once over threshold he can have difficulty disengaging. His guarding can involve food, valued objects and his primary person. He can also display significant reactivity toward unfamiliar people and activity around his property. Helios is currently receiving veterinary behavioral treatment, including medication and behavior modification. His complete Penn Vet evaluation and behavioral/bite history will be provided to any serious potential adopter. Nothing about his history will be withheld or minimized. Because of his history, Helios needs a very specific home: adult-only, no children living in or regularly visiting the home, quiet/low-traffic, secure containment, and an owner experienced with large dogs and significant behavioral needs. His future owner needs to be willing to continue working with veterinary behavioral professionals and understand that Helios may require lifelong environmental management. This is not an urgent placement. His owner loves him tremendously and can continue caring for him while the right person is found. The goal isn't simply to find someone willing to take Helios. It's to find someone whose home and lifestyle genuinely fit the dog that he is. Potential homes will be carefully screened, and serious candidates will speak directly with his owner about his complete history before any placement is considered.
