About Harry P

Meet Harry P. �%9D%A4��%8F Harry is a soon to be 8-year-old male English Springer Spaniel who is lovable and very opinionated. He knows what he likes-and what he doesn't. Harry is a true Velcro dog. He would much rather be right beside you than off doing his own thing, and his favorite place is probably the couch next to his person. He enjoys attention, having people around, and showing off his goofy side by tossing his stuffed animals around or playing with his favorite cookie ball after dinner. He also enjoys carrots and ice cubes. Harry has spent most of his life with his mom, and that bond is a huge part of who he is. Over the past few years, as her health declined, different people stepped in to care for him while she was away. The people who helped with him have enjoyed his company and have seen how much he values being around people. He is getting older and has slowed down some, but he still perks up when someone engages with him. He enjoys getting outside, being included, and having a comfortable place to settle in. He isn't looking for a life full of adventure. Unfortunately, his world has changed dramatically. After his mom's stroke, she was away for long periods of time while family and others pieced together his care. Harry struggled with those changes and would bark, whine, cry, and fuss when she was gone. Now, his mom is going into a nursing home, and he needs to find a new loving family. This is where we want to be very honest about what Harry will need. Harry is not the right fit for every household. He is very protective of his person and his home and can become possessive when someone approaches or interacts with the person he is attached to. He also does not do well with other animals. His reactions to other dogs include barking and growling. Because of this, he needs to be the only pet in the home, and we strongly recommend a house without children. Harry is a leash puller, and encountering another dog while out can be extremely difficult. His adopter or foster will need to be comfortable managing this and providing the kind of structure that will help him succeed. Harry also has a history of nipping/biting. Unfortunately, we do not currently have the complete history or circumstances surrounding those incidents. Due to the health of his mom, she is no longer able to provide that information, and we are continuing to gather as much as we can. We do know of at least one incident involving someone roughly handling his ears, and ears are something Harry does not like touched. Because of this history, his limits need to be respected. We would not recommend grabbing his collar or taking away food, bones, toys, or other things he may value. So, what kind of home are we looking for? Someone with experience with dogs. Someone patient and willing to give Harry time to adjust. Someone who understands that he has some behaviors that need to be taken seriously and isn't expecting him to become a completely different dog. Most importantly, someone who can see the whole dog. Because underneath all of this is an older dog who loves his people, wants to be part of the household, enjoys a good couch, gets excited about his cookie ball, and still has plenty of life left to live. We are looking for either a foster or forever home for Harry. He is currently in Pennsylvania, but we have a team of people helping him and are willing to consider the right placement anywhere along the East Coast. He is not a big fan of car rides, so transportation will need to be planned carefully. We know Harry isn't going to be the right dog for everyone. And that's okay. He doesn't need everyone. He needs the right person who is willing to meet him where he is, give him time, respect his limits, and provide him with a safe place to spend the rest of his life.
