About Marley

Meet Marley �%9D%A4��%8F Marley is a sweet, silly, loving, loyal, and extremely intelligent dog who forms a very strong bond with his person. He is highly devoted to his family and protective of his 'mom.' He is also a very high-energy dog who thrives on activity, adventure, and being part of his pack. He was born May 2022. Marley absolutely loves the outdoors-especially hiking in the mountains and exploring streams. He is smart and learns quickly, including treat puzzles, he knows several basic and silent commands. When his tale wags his whole body wiggles. We have had Marley since he was about 4-5 months old. Before coming to us, he was abused and attacked by other dogs as a very young puppy and lost a toe. We believe that early trauma has contributed to his behavioral challenges. Marley currently lives with a dominant male Mastiff mix. Within our home, Marley is the submissive dog and is able to live with him successfully. However, Marley does not do well with unfamiliar dogs and has a very high prey drive. His prey drive is extremely strong, and he will pursue or attack animals ranging from insects and lizards to other animals. When he is simply chasing something like a fly or lizard, he can generally be redirected with verbal commands. However, when he enters a dog-aggressive attack mode, verbal commands are not always reliable. An e-collar or being on a lead has been effective for interrupting and managing this behavior. We're working on recall immediately when he begins barking at other dogs and that has been working before he goes into attack mode. Highly treat motivated. Marley is also timid around older children, approximately ages 9-11, and because of his behavior, we do not consider him safe around babies or small children, he is great with teenagers. We are new grandparents, which is ultimately why we have made the difficult decision to look for a new home for him. When the grand baby comes over we have to put Marley in a room. Marley needs an experienced, committed owner who understands his behavioral needs and is prepared to manage his prey drive and dog reactivity responsibly. His ideal home would be: Without babies or small children Without free-roaming small pets- Good with small animals IF securely housed in appropriate cages or tanks. We have birds, and several reptiles. He watches them intensely. Someone experienced with high-energy, strong, reactive dogs A home where Marley can receive plenty of exercise, structure, mental stimulation, and outdoor activity Ideally, someone who can give him lots of companionship, as he has some separation anxiety and strongly prefers being with his pack. A large dog may be possible with careful, proper introductions and management, since Marley successfully lives with another large dog. However, his compatibility with any individual dog would need to be evaluated rather than assumed. Marley is not an easy or suitable dog for every home, and we want to be completely honest about that. At the same time, he is incredibly loving, loyal, intelligent, affectionate with his people, and full of personality. We are hoping to find someone who understands his challenges and can give him the structured, active, teen & adult-only environment where he has the best chance to thrive. We love Marley very much, and this is an incredibly difficult decision. Our goal is to find him a safe, responsible, and permanent home where he can be loved and properly managed.
