About Axel

Axel is one of the most beautiful, loyal souls. He's a 4year old half Husky and half Boxer mix. He was surrendered as a stray, but it was later determined he was dumped from an abusive home. Axel, his former Mom human and children all suffered at the hand of the man in the house. Axel is willing to lay down his life and do whatever it takes to protect his people. Axel's triggers and behavioral issues stemming from his past have proven to be TOO MUCH TO DEEM HIM ADOPTABLE AT THIS POINT IN TIME. He has also proven to be too much for Jesse's Dog Rescue at this point in time and WILL NEED A RESCUE WITH EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE ON DOGS WITH RESOURCE GUARDING AND BEHAVIORAL ISSUES STEMMING FROM TRAUMA! He's NOT broken, but his spirit is. (/3 Axel is DEFINITELY a Husky, there's no doubt about it from the way he acts! He will prance around and goof off in play groups. He also will howl his protests when he's upset, one of his people is emotional, or if a dog or person is injured. It is also evident in his behavioral issues. Axel has Resource Guarding in regards to food, territory and people. He has bit over high value treats and lunged at employees he didn't respect taking his food bowl. He views women and children especially as something to protect and has bitten both dogs and humans in the name of protecting them. When he was first adopted, owners had to train him to not go for Dad every time he went to kiss or hug his wife because Axel couldn't gauge good VS bad physicality. His desire to protect his people is SO strong that he would also 'police' the yards and think he was helping by overcorrecting dogs who had not been listening to our employees. He desires to make the rules and be in charge of other dogs and lesser known people, likely for a sense of control in his crazy life. He has become cocky and easily aggravated since being resurrendered to us after a year in a home. (/3 Axel's surrender was filled with sobbing and hyperventilating from his owners. It broke them, but they resurrendered Axel due to his unpredictability and lack of funding to work through that. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THEY DEEM HIM A PERFECT DOG DESPITE THIS. Truly, Axel just needs TIME AND RESOURCES THEY AND US DO NOT HAVE. Reportedly, Axel had been chewing his bone (one of the marrow ones) that Dad bought for him and had been doing too much too fast so dad went to take the bone away. The way they had worked with him on taking his things away is by petting him on the side of his head until he calms enough for them to pull treats away. Usually, Axel gives warning signs like whale eyes or a low growl, but he gave none of those the other night. After the initial bite, Dad scooped up their baby who was in her bouncer on the ground because he had been worried about leaving her behind. Dad grabbing the baby is what set off Axel pushing into the bedroom and attempting to go after him once more. To Axel, that's HIS bone and baby girlthat could potentially get taken and never given back. No extensive injuries. When Axel's given commands, he listens. Unfortunately, he also pushes boundaries. His previous owners also mentioned that he absolutely adored their daughter and was likely trying to protect her. Axel LOVES children and women, viewing them as something to protect. Axel needs someone able to WORK WITH HIM WHILE HE WORKS THROUGH THIS.
