About Murphy

I am writing to post about, sadly, rehoming my 6-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound, Murphy. Murphy has been part of my life since he was a puppy. He was adopted at approximately 10 weeks old from Woodhaven and Trenton Animal Shelter in Woodhaven, MI. He was neutered at approximately 6 months of age. Murphy came from a litter that resulted from a family friend unexpectedly discovering that their recently adopted female dog was pregnant. Murphy is a sweet, independent dog who enjoys going on walks, cuddling up on the couch, and spending time outside sniffing all of the neighborhood and wildlife smells in the backyard. He is happiest when he can have his own space and a calm environment. He is currently on anti-anxiety medication as well as medication for itching, but is otherwise healthy. I am happy to provide his most recent veterinary records and any additional information that may be helpful. Our family dynamic has recently changed with the addition of a baby, and after a great deal of consideration, we have realized that our current home is no longer the environment where Murphy can thrive. We also have two other dogs, and over the past several years Murphy's anxiety has increasingly made the dynamics of a multi-dog household difficult for him. He can become tense and overwhelmed, and we have seen how much more comfortable he is when he has space and individual attention. We have worked with Murphy on training and have also participated in training with our other dogs in an effort to make our household work for everyone. However, after approximately three years of trying to manage his anxiety and considering what would be best for him long-term, we believe Murphy would be happiest and safest in a home where he is the only dog. We feel he would benefit tremendously from being able to receive consistent attention, have his own space, and live in a calm environment without the added stress of sharing his home with other dogs. Because Murphy has always lived in our household, we do not have enough experience to accurately say how he does with cats or children. We would want to be completely transparent about that and would be happy to provide any additional information about his personality, routines, behaviors, and needs that could help determine the right placement for him. This decision does not come lightly. Murphy has been a very important part of our family for nearly six years, and it is heartbreaking to consider saying goodbye to him. At the same time, we want to make a responsible decision that gives him the opportunity to live the rest of his life in an environment where he can feel comfortable, secure, and loved. I also wanted to ask a few questions about your process: What does the intake and evaluation process look like? If Murphy is placed with a foster family, would we be able to sponsor him financially or assist with his care in any way to make the transition easier? Would we be able to receive occasional updates about Murphy after he is placed in foster or permanently adopted? Is there anything else you would recommend we provide to help your team determine whether Murphy would be a good fit for your rescue? We truly want to do what is best for Murphy, even though this is an incredibly difficult decision for our family. Our hope is to find him a loving, stable home where he can receive the individual attention he deserves and feel comfortable for the rest of his life.
