About JAX

JAX is a 5 year old, 14.8 pound Shih Tzu who was originally surrendered to us because his family could not take care of him. He was in very rough shape and it took us a while to get him healthy enough to find a home. Unfortunately JAX has been adopted and returned a couple of times and we are still looking for his family! JAX is such a wonderful little dog who loves his people and wants to be close to them. If you have a lap, he will be on it! He loves attention and being petted, and his foster has discovered that brushing him while giving him love is the perfect combination for loving on him. JAX does well with the other dogs in his foster home, although he prefers his fur siblings to respect his personal space and will let them know if they don't. He has started playing with toys for a few minutes at a time and likes to chase after the other dogs when they get the zoomies. He may sound very serious while doing it, but his wagging tail gives him away. Based on our experience with him, we think JAX would be happiest with a low-key female dog as a companion. We do not know how he is with cats or kids. JAX really loves being with his people, so we would like to find him a home where someone is around most of the time. When his person does leave, he will quietly lie by the door and wait for them to come back. He also wants to be wherever his people are. If you go inside and leave JAX outside, he will make his displeasure known until you let him in! He does not like to go outside by himself at all. If you have a dog door and expect him to use it to take himself out to potty, you might want to rethink that. JAX wants you to go with him while he does his business. House training continues to be a work in progress. JAX will use a potty pad but is still marking furniture, so belly bands are a must while his new family continues working with him. At night, however, he does great sleeping in bed with no accidents. Be warned that this little guy somehow manages to spread out like a 120-pound Irish Wolfhound, so your share of the bed may become considerably smaller. JAX does well on outings and enjoys all the attention and pets he receives. He is also a very observant passenger in the car and keeps a close eye on all potential threats. At home, he actually watches TV and apparently enjoys Westerns, although critters appearing on the screen will receive a very vocal greeting from him. Storms do not seem to bother him, he eats well, and he loves treat time. JAX was returned to us after his adopter reported that he had a seizure. There was also a previous incident in his first foster home that may have been a focal seizure, although we cannot say for certain that it was a seizure at all. His current foster has not observed any seizure activity during his time with her, but a different previous adopter also reported some sort of an episode. At this time, JAX does not require seizure medication. We simply cannot predict whether he will ever have another seizure. It is possible these were isolated incidents, but there is also a possibility that he could experience seizures in the future and eventually require treatment. Anyone considering JAX should be comfortable with that possibility and prepared to work with their veterinarian if seizure activity occurs. None of that changes the most important thing his foster wants everyone to know: JAX is a wonderful dog who loves being loved. JAX is neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *To meet or adopt one of our dogs, you must first submit an adoption application for review. We adopt within a 6 hour drive to Pensacola. Puppies and dogs with pending vet appointments, and dogs with behavioral or medical issues are only adoptable locally (within 1 hour to Pensacola).
