JADE - BEAUTY, ELEGANCE & A HEART FULL OF LOVE Some dogs are beautiful. Some dogs have beautiful personalities. Jade somehow managed to get both. Jade is a stunning 5-year-old, 71-lb female Shepherd at Upland Animal Shelter in Upland, California. With her silky black coat, elegant build and unforgettable golden eyes, she has an almost regal appearance. But spend a few minutes with her and you quickly discover that her greatest beauty is her personality. Jade absolutely LOVES people. Given the choice between exploring the play yard and staying beside her person for attention, Jade frequently chooses her person. Petting may actually be her favorite hobby. Her preferred 'spa treatment' includes full-body pets, neck and ear massages, brushing, belly rubs and occasional attempts to fit all 71 pounds of herself into your lap. Treats during the procedure are also highly appreciated. Jade knows SIT, DOWN and PAW. But PAW has become more than a command. Stop petting her before she thinks you're finished and don't be surprised if a paw gently taps your leg or arm: 'Excuse me. More, please.' She is affectionate, social, treat motivated, takes treats gently and is smart and eager to learn. She walks well on leash and particularly well with a harness. Like many strong working-breed dogs, she can sometimes lead the walk, but her pulling is not constant or extreme. Jade is also very responsive to her handler, which is especially important because she does have some areas that need continued training. We recommend Jade as the ONLY DOG in the home. She has not had a formal dog-to-dog introduction, but she has shown reactivity toward other dogs, particularly when they come too close to her space. On walks she may bark at a passing dog, and in the play yard she may bark or growl when another dog approaches the fence. The encouraging part is how redirectable she is. A calm 'Let's go' will often get her attention back on her handler and she continues the walk. Until she receives additional training, maintaining a comfortable distance from other dogs is recommended. Jade also has a HIGH PREY DRIVE and is NOT GOOD WITH CATS or small animals. Squirrels, mice, lizards and other little creatures definitely get her attention, so secure handling outdoors is important. We recommend children 13+. Jade has shown no reactivity toward people-in fact, she actively seeks human interaction. But she's a big, affectionate 71-pound girl who may enthusiastically lean into you or flop upside down into your lap demanding belly rubs, so she could unintentionally knock over a small child. Jade would thrive with someone who wants a close companion and will provide affection, exercise, structure and continued training. In return, you will get a devoted dog who would probably be perfectly happy spending the rest of her life walking beside you, lying at your feet and occasionally reminding you with one well-placed PAW that you have neglected your petting responsibilities. Beautiful outside. Beautiful inside. That's Jade.
