About Zoe

Meet Zoe, a sweet 19-pound senior shih tzu who will celebrate her 12th birthday in November! Despite everything she has been through, Zoe has so much love left to give and is hoping to find the peaceful, committed furever home she deserves. Zoe's story is a heartbreaking one. After spending 11 years with the same family, she was brought to a veterinarian in New York City to be euthanized when her they could no longer afford the medical care she needed. Zoe had a mast cell tumor that required surgery, but thankfully, the veterinarian advocated for her and convinced her family to surrender her to a rescue instead. The rescue covered her surgery, had her spayed, and cared for her in a foster home for six months before she was adopted in July. Unfortunately, Zoe's current home simply isn't the right environment for her. She lives in a high-rise senior community where barking can easily be heard by neighboring residents, and Zoe struggles with being left alone. Her owner loves her dearly and wants to find her a home better suited to her needs rather than risk Zoe losing another home down the road. Zoe is an incredibly people-oriented dog. In fact, she has won the hearts of residents and staff throughout her senior community, where people regularly beckon her over for a visit. She has her own adorable greeting routine: first she sniffs your feet, then comes the wagging tail, and if you're lucky enough to become one of her favorites, she'll roll right onto her back and request a belly rub. She has even become something of an unofficial 'therapy dog' in the lobby of her building! Zoe may bark when left by herself so because of this, we're looking for a home where someone is around much of the time and, ideally, a single-family home where occasional barking won't jeopardize her living situation. Don't let her age fool you, either! She recently had bloodwork and a physical exam and Zoe is in excellent health! She has good mobility, is great on walks, and is completely housetrained. She does have dry eye that requires daily medication, but she's an absolute champ about it and willingly allows her eyes to be cleaned and her drops administered. Zoe is also one smart cookie! She loves puzzles and happily works for her breakfast each morning. She and her owner practice obedience every day, and she knows 'Heel,' 'Place,' 'Down,' 'Here,' 'Sit,' and 'Stay.' She adjusts her walking speed to match her person while heeling and will stop and make eye contact when her handler stops. Her current owner has also been working diligently on Zoe's separation anxiety and crate training. While Zoe isn't yet comfortable being alone for longer periods, they're focusing on making her crate a positive, safe place. She's already figured out that it's worth checking several times a day just in case a treat has magically appeared inside! Videos from her previous rescue show Zoe happily playing with other dogs, but her current owner hasn't personally had the opportunity to see her interact with dogs in a play-date setting, so any canine siblings would need an appropriate introduction. She's also an easygoing little companion at home. Zoe typically settles in for the night around 8:00 PM and sleeps until approximately 6:30-8:00 AM. After breakfast, she enjoys a 30-40 minute morning walk followed by two or three shorter walks throughout the day. And Zoe won't arrive empty-pawed! Unless her adopter prefers otherwise, she'll bring along her puzzles, toys, crate, 'Place' rug, food and water bowls, leash, harness, collar, new winter coat, food, and treats - everything she needs to begin her next chapter. Most importantly, Zoe needs people. She wants companionship, affection, belly rubs, walks, puzzles, and someone she can count on being there. Her current owner wants potential adopters to meet Zoe where she is most comfortable so they can see the dog she knows and loves - walking the grounds, relaxing in her apartment, and happily greeting her many friends in the lobby so meet & greets will take place in Bridgeport. Zoe has already had far too much change in her life. We want her next move to be her last. Somewhere out there is a person or family looking for a sweet senior companion who wants nothing more than to be by their side. We hope they'll give Zoe the safe, quiet and loving retirement she so deserves. Her adoption fee is $450 and Zoe is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative.
