About Indy

Indy is a 1-year, 4-month-old German Shepherd who absolutely loves people. She is affectionate, eager to engage, and happiest when she has someone to connect with. She's also a young working-breed dog who has missed out on some of the structure and socialization she needed early in life. Indy has a lot of energy, and meeting that need is important. When she has an appropriate outlet first, she's able to slow down, focus, and show just how much she knows. She responds well to direction, knows several commands, and previously walked well on leash. We're currently working with her to rebuild those leash manners. She can be jumpy when excited, but once you're able to get her attention, she listens well. She is also crate trained and reportedly enjoyed spending time in her crate in her previous home. When she was instead allowed to free roam, she became destructive. Indy will benefit from an adopter who understands that appropriate management, including crate time, is an important part of providing a young dog with structure. Her uncertainty is most noticeable around other dogs. Indy has lived with dogs previously and has shown no aggression when meeting them here. Instead, she becomes overexcited and unsure of herself. She simply doesn't have the social skills or confidence yet to know how to appropriately interact. Because of this, we are currently looking for a home where Indy can be the only dog while her adopter continues working on positive, controlled socialization. Indy needs an experienced home. We are looking for someone with previous German Shepherd experience or experience with large working breeds, particularly under-socialized young dogs. She needs consistent boundaries, physical and mental exercise, continued training, and someone who understands how important routine is for a dog like her. Because of her size, energy level, and tendency to herd, Indy is looking for a home with children 12 and older. Indy is incredibly people-oriented, intelligent, and responsive. She doesn't need someone to simply give her more space or wear her out. She needs someone prepared to give her direction. With the right person providing consistency and appropriate outlets for both her body and her brain, Indy has everything she needs to succeed.
