Intake Date: 24 March 2026 ----- Age: Unknown (est. 2-3 yrs) ----- Breed: Clumber Spaniel ----- Weight: 55 lbs ----- Status: Breeder Surrender ----- Compatible with: dogs, cats (potentially, no guarantees), respectful children ----- Suitable for: home with a fenced yard ----- Medical/Behavioral Needs: continued confidence building ----- Additional Notes: Meet Nellie Nellie has come such a long way since arriving in rescue. Coming from a breeding environment with limited exposure to everyday life, she was initially unsure of many of the things we take for granted. We have spent a lot of time working with her, building her confidence and introducing her to the routines and experiences of being a companion dog-and she is doing wonderfully. Nellie is best described as cautious but curious. She may take a moment to assess something new, but her curiosity usually wins out. Underneath that initial caution is an amazing dog with a wonderfully sweet, inquisitive personality. She has made tremendous progress with handling and grooming. Regular baths and coat maintenance are now simply part of her routine, and she handles them beautifully. Her leash skills have improved significantly, and she continues to gain confidence with new experiences and everyday life. Nellie has been great with the other dogs she has met with one exception: she and Phyllis simply are not compatible. Those two have made their opinions of one another pretty clear! This has not been representative of Nellie's interactions with other dogs, and she has done wonderfully with everyone else. She has also been introduced to cats. Nellie can become excited and curious when they run, so a home with cats would require appropriate introductions, supervision and boundaries. We believe coexistence may be possible with the right cat and household, but compatibility cannot be guaranteed. Nellie's ideal family will understand her past without allowing it to define her future. She doesn't need to be sheltered from every new or uncomfortable experience because she was undersocialized. In fact, that would likely keep her exactly where she is. She needs a family willing to continue the work we've started, gently challenging her, exposing her to new experiences, setting expectations and encouraging her forward even when she is initially unsure. There is a difference between forcing a dog beyond their limits and helping a dog learn that they are capable of more. Nellie has shown us again and again that she is capable of more. She has blossomed into a sweet, curious and genuinely wonderful dog. Her new family should be ready to celebrate how far she has come while continuing to help her become an even more confident version of herself. Nellie doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her past. She needs someone excited about her future. --- If interested in meeting and potentially adopting, please read the adoption requirements and complete the adoption application located at forbellessake.org. Once processed and approved, a meet and greet can be scheduled and, if a match is found, adoption can be finalized at that time. FBS standard adoption fee is $175. All residents are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for any known medical needs. Housetraining is not guaranteed, but crate training is worked on with all residents. A secure physically fenced yard is prioritized if a yard is present. Temperament cannot be and is not guaranteed.
