About Auggie & Levi

My friend and former fianc�� has terminal cancer. When we were together, two puppies came into our lives. They immediately chose him as their person, which was actually okay because I already had my own dogs, and they had chosen me. When we eventually went our separate ways, the boys went with him. Now, heartbreakingly, he is no longer able to care for them. I brought them to my home while he was in the hospital, hoping I could make it work. But it became very clear that my home is not the right home for them. They are brothers, Australian Shepherds with their beautiful natural tails, born March 23, 2018. They are 8 years old, although someone forgot to tell them they are supposed to act like it. When we brought them home as puppies, we did pretty much everything wrong. ��%BD��%BD��%BD��%BD I had never even heard of littermate syndrome, so whatever you're supposed to do with littermates, we did the opposite. And yet, these boys grew into two incredibly loving, sweet, funny, empathetic dogs with beautiful souls. Both are true Australian Shepherds, with the energy and intelligence that comes with the breed. They recently had full senior blood panels and veterinary examinations, and both are in excellent health. They are neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations. They are both about 45 lb. Because the last six months have been anything but routine for them, their training needs a refresher. They know sit, lay down, stay, wait and come-although, like many Aussies, their hearing becomes remarkably selective when they have other plans. ��%BD��%BD��%BD��%BD Both boys enjoy other dogs. They have spent time at Thousand Hills Pet Resort, meeting new dogs on a regular basis without problems. They are also good with cats when properly introduced. They love adventures. They love the beach. They love the ocean. They have gone swimming, and although Levi enjoyed it more than Auggie, both boys were determined to retrieve a toy from the pool and bring it back up the ramp. They even enjoy running alongside my electric tricycle. Auggie pulls so hard I'm pretty sure he thinks HE is the motor. ��%BD��%BD��%BD��%BD Both will chase a ball, although Levi is much more enthusiastic about it. Returning it, however, depends entirely on their mood. Levi is also a ball thief. If someone at the beach is playing fetch with their dog, Levi may decide that their ball is actually his ball. Convincing him otherwise can become an adventure. ��%BD%9D%A4��%BD��%BD%8F Auggie Auggie is the shorter, more solid, squatty brother. He is a true herding dog. His attention is constantly directed outward toward the world around him. He wants to know what is happening in the neighborhood, what everyone is doing, and whether there is something interesting happening that he should be involved in. He is energetic, curious and busy. While staying with me, we discovered that Auggie has a strong interest in livestock. He wanted to chase my neighbor's goats and had a great time chasing the chickens. He wasn't trying to hurt them, but he plays hard enough that feathers were flying. So I do not recommend Auggie for a home with free-range chickens or livestock that would prefer not to be enthusiastically herded around the property. ��%BD��%BD��%BD��%BD ��%BD%9D%A4��%BD��%BD%8F Levi Levi is the taller, lankier brother, and he is much more people-focused. He enjoyed watching the goats through the fence and actually seemed to make friends with them. They would run back and forth together along the fence, but Levi never tried to control or move them. The chickens? He couldn't have cared less. But people? That's where Levi's heart is. He is one of the most loving and empathetic dogs I have ever known, and that is saying something. A few weeks ago, I was standing at my kitchen sink when, for no reason I could identify, I suddenly started crying uncontrollably. Before I even really understood what was happening, Levi had his front paws up on the counter, pawing at my hand. When I collapsed onto the floor, he was immediately in my lap, putting his face right in mine, completely concerned and trying desperately to make me feel better. Auggie eventually came over to see what was happening and was loving and concerned too-but Levi was at my side before I even knew I needed him. These boys deserve a home where they can run, explore, play, and be Australian Shepherds. They need people who understand the breed, appreciate their energy and intelligence, and are willing to give them a refresher on training so they can become the very best versions of themselves. I know finding a home for two 8-year-old Australian Shepherds together is a big ask. But these boys have so much life left in them. And they have an immeasurable amount of love to give. I wish with everything in me that I could be the home they need. It breaks my heart that I cannot.
