SAGE NEEDS A HOME OR RESCUE NOW - PLEASE DON'T LET THIS 9-MONTH-OLD PUPPY GROW UP IN A SHELTER Name: SAGE. Animal ID: IEPA-A-19438. Breed: Cane Corso Mastiff Mix. Sex: Female. Age: 9 months. Location: Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, CA. Intake Date: August 7, 2026. Sage is only nine months old. She should be learning about the world, discovering what it means to belong to a family, and being taught how to become the wonderful adult dog she has every potential to be. Instead, she is growing up in a shelter that urgently needs space. Sage needs someone to see her NOW. Behind this big adolescent puppy is an affectionate, intelligent young dog who desperately needs what every puppy needs: guidance, consistency, socialization, exercise, patience, and love. One volunteer recently spent time with Sage for the first time. He didn't know what to expect when he opened her kennel. Sage was easy to take out. She walked easily on leash. And when they reached the play yard, the first thing Sage did wasn't jump or run around. She sat beside him and covered his face with kisses. She enjoyed being petted and showed no discomfort with being touched. She already knows 'sit,' loves toys, and eagerly interacts with people. She was also easy to return to her kennel. Another volunteer had a similarly positive experience. But Sage is still very much an adolescent puppy, and she needs an adopter or rescue who understands that. Sage can be jumpy and mouthy during play. A volunteer also reported that during one interaction she became overly assertive, pinning the volunteer and using her mouth while playing. Importantly, her mouthiness has been described as play behavior rather than biting or nipping, but because of her size and strength, it needs to be taken seriously and addressed through consistent training and appropriate boundaries. At only nine months old, Sage appears to be a young dog who simply has not yet learned all the manners expected of a large adult dog. And she deserves the opportunity to learn them. Sage is smart and eager to learn, affectionate, social, playful, and active. She already walks well on leash and knows the sit command. With structure and positive, consistent training, she has so much potential. Because Sage is a large, powerful adolescent who can play roughly, a home experienced with large breeds would be ideal. Children should be 13 or older. Sage has NOT yet been formally tested with other dogs. However, volunteers report that she has shown no reactivity toward dogs encountered on walks. She has NOT been tested with cats, so no assumptions should be made about cat compatibility. SAGE'S ATTRIBUTES: Affectionate. Social butterfly. Smart and eager to learn. Knows 'sit'. Walks well on leash. Loves toys. Active and playful. Adolescent-like. Can initially be shy/nervous and may need time to warm up. Jumpy. Mouthy during play. Can become overly assertive/rough during play. Kids 13+ only. Dog testing pending; no reactivity observed on walks. Not tested with cats. Would do best in an active home. Sage doesn't need someone who expects a perfectly trained dog. She needs someone willing to help a puppy become one. At nine months old, her story has barely begun. She is at an age when training, socialization, routine, and positive experiences can make an enormous difference in the adult dog she becomes. But she needs that opportunity now. The shelter is full, and Sage urgently needs an adopter, foster placement through a rescue, or rescue organization willing to give this young girl the chance she deserves. Please don't overlook her because she still has puppy manners. Don't wait for someone else to save her. Sage needs someone to step forward for her now. Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, California.
