CONNIE - GIVE HER A LITTLE TIME, AND SHE'LL GIVE YOU HER WHOLE HEART. Location: Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, CA Animal. ID: IEPA-A-18517. Breed: German Shepherd / Golden Retriever Mix. Sex: Female, Spayed. Age: 2 years, 2 months. Weight: 56 lbs. Intake Date: January 13, 2026. Some dogs greet everyone as if they've been best friends forever. Connie is a little different. She likes to take a moment. She watches. She gets to know you. She decides that you're someone she can trust. And then something wonderful happens: Connie becomes your shadow. Connie has come such a long way since she first arrived at the shelter. The dog we're getting to know today is affectionate, calm, observant, intelligent, and incredibly devoted to her people. Once Connie feels comfortable with you, get ready for a Velcro dog. She loves being near her favorite humans and seems happiest simply sharing life with them. Whether that means going for a walk, enjoying a good brushing, receiving affection, or simply relaxing nearby, Connie values companionship. She doesn't need to be the center of attention. She just wants to be close to the people she loves. A LOVELY WALKING COMPANION: Connie is easy to handle getting in and out of her kennel and walks very nicely on leash. She follows direction well and already knows basic commands, including 'sit.' She is attentive to both her handler and her surroundings, and her intelligence is easy to see. With consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement, we think this smart girl could continue learning very quickly in a home of her own. LEARNING THAT NEW PEOPLE CAN BE FRIENDS: One of the most encouraging things about Connie has been watching her confidence grow. She can take a little time to warm up to unfamiliar people, so introductions should happen at Connie's pace rather than being rushed. But she has made wonderful progress. She has even become comfortable approaching unfamiliar male volunteers for affection, a lovely sign of how much her confidence and trust have grown. Give Connie a little space to observe you. Give her kindness. Give her time. She'll take it from there. WHAT ABOUT OTHER DOGS? Connie has not yet completed formal dog testing at the shelter. However, she has shown no reactivity toward other dogs while walking or when around the play areas, which is encouraging. A proper introduction and formal evaluation would still be important before determining whether she could live successfully with another dog. Cats are not recommended. CONNIE'S IDEAL HOME: Connie would likely thrive in a medium-activity home where life has some structure but plenty of companionship. She doesn't need nonstop excitement. She would probably be very happy with regular walks, time outside, affection, mental stimulation, and, most importantly, people she can bond with. A secure yard is recommended, along with adopters who understand that the best relationships aren't always instantaneous. Sometimes they grow. And with Connie, giving her that little bit of time may reward you with something very special: the extraordinary loyalty of a dog who has decided that you are her person.
