Had behavior issues occasionally with canines in previous home ----- Additional Notes: Meet Hugo! He is in foster care in North East Nebraska but transport is an option to a single dog home. Some of you may remember Hugo! He first came to For Belle's Sake Rescue in September 2023 as an unclaimed stray from the pound. Shortly afterward, he found what we hoped would be his forever home. Unfortunately, it doesn't always go according to plan, and Hugo has recently returned to rescue after spending the last several years with his adopter. Hugo is with our skilled fosters in NE Nebraska. Returning to rescue is a big adjustment for any dog. We're taking the time to get to know Hugo all over again; not just the happy, silly little Yorkie we remember, but the dog he has become through his life experiences. Hugo is doing well with the dogs in his foster home, engaging in appropriate play and reading social cues nicely. He has also shown little interest in the resident cats, choosing to simply ignore them. Based on the behaviors described by his previous owner, we believe Hugo can become overstimulated in certain situations. While we continue working with him and learning more about his triggers, we feel his best opportunity for success is in a single-dog home where he can build confidence and establish routines. Should our recommendations change as we continue evaluating him, we'll be sure to update his profile. Based on what we've learned about Hugo thus far, it's possible he simply didn't have many opportunities to experience new places, new people, or novel situations. Dogs build confidence through positive exposure, and when those experiences are limited, the world can feel like a pretty overwhelming place. That's exactly what we see with Hugo. In unfamiliar environments or when faced with something new, he initially becomes quiet, withdrawn, and a bit nervous as he tries to process everything around him. But once he realizes he's safe and has a chance to settle in...the Hugo we remember comes right back. His goofy grin appears, his tail starts wagging, he asks for cuddles, and his playful little personality shines through. We truly believe Hugo isn't lacking affection or desire to connect. He simply needs a family willing to give him a little time to decompress, build confidence, and learn that new experiences don't have to be scary. Once he gets there, he's an incredibly sweet little companion with a smile that's impossible not to love. We're also helping Hugo get back to feeling his best physically. When he first entered rescue in 2023, he weighed approximately 14 pounds. Since returning to us, he now weighs 20 pounds. Based on his frame, we feel a healthy weight for Hugo is likely closer to 16 pounds, so he'll be joining us on a gradual weight-loss journey. While a few extra pounds may not seem like a big deal, excess weight can contribute to joint discomfort, decreased mobility, reduced stamina, and even influence behavior. Dogs that are uncomfortable are often less tolerant of stressful situations, so improving Hugo's physical health is an important part of helping him feel his best both mentally and emotionally. We have no concerns regarding Hugo with people. He's looking for someone willing to give him a little patience as he settles in, and in return, you'll have a loyal little companion who just wants a safe place to call home. Could that be with you? '%90-------------------------------------------------------------------- If interested in meeting and potentially adopting, please read the adoption requirements and complete the adoption application located at forbellessake.org. Once processed and approved a meet and greet can be scheduled and if a match an adoption can be finalized at that time. FBS standard adoption fee is $175. All residents are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for any known medical needs. Breeds are sometimes a best guess. Housetraining is not guaranteed but crate training is worked on with all residents. A secure physically fenced yard is prioritized if a yard is present. Temperament cannot be and is not guaranteed.
