HAS FOSTER, NEEDS RESCUE - 8/18 DEADLINE, SR CHOW ON EUTH LIST AT OAKLAND SHELTER IN N CAL, see videos, did well on dog test; ID #0061270958 -10 yr CHOW 'BUBBA'- 55 LBS 8/18 DEADLINE- OAKLAND, CA (N CAL) - GENTLE SENIOR CHOW AT OAKLAND ANIMAL SERVICES- NEEDS FOSTER AND RESCUE -dog friendly in dog test, takes treats gently! ID #0061270958 -10 yr, 55 lb CHOW 'BUBBA'- NOW AT GREAT RISK IN FULL SHELTER. RESCUE ONLY, BUT MAY BE AVAILABLE TO ADOPT ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS, BUT SHELTER SAYS NEEDS RESCUE or commitment by deadline (and thus RESCUES need a committed FOSTER TOO) The Oakland shelter is asking for urgent help to place dear Bubba who was surrendered by his owner sadly for financial reasons. We have nice video of him with both people and another dog. Here are some notes from a volunteer that recently took him out: 'He's food motivated, gentle taking treats, trots nicely exiting building. Approaches handler asking for treat offerings while standing and sitting. Maintaining proximity while taking treats with a soft, gentle mouth throughout. Except brief, chin, neck and shoulder pets, giving clear indicators when he's ready to opt out. Avoids going back in kennel, but follows handler in when stepping in first and leading in with arm. Approaches handler at threshold and accepts pets and treats during leash.' Video of Bubba. He can be seen being gentle with the volunteer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqTTxfSfuU8 We were further told by the shelter, 'the owner has had Bubba for 10 years. He was muzzled out of precaution for intake but did not snap at anyone during the intake process. Our vet did an exam and noted the following: severe ear infections, eye issue. She did not push him further for more invasive handling/exam. If we have a pathway to live outcome our vet would anesthetize, neuter, treat ears, examine eye, groom. For a chow, he was very good for his exam. He is currently not neutered, but if he has a rescue or adopter, we can do that.' The shelter later tested him and said: 'He did well on his dog/dog; you can see the interaction here.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=4K_oi5dYQ4OciQXV... . In video, he can be seen calmly approaching a more active dog and doing well, as well as with a volunteer, as well as around several staff without issues. He was relaxed and submissive even around the hyper dog in fact. Despite this, the shelter let us know, 'He is not available for adoption at this time because he is only handleable by our most experienced volunteers and staff'. However, we suspect he would be fine with a chow savvy home and is just a little shy understandably, and we can ask again if they might consider a serious adopter. For now, they have said: 'He is a rescue only candidate and has until Monday 8/18 to find rescue or he may be euthanized.' Therefore, if you may be interested to foster or foster adopt), rescue, or need further help, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network, who is trying to assist the shelter with his placement, and we will try to connect fosters with a willing rescue. We also have his shelter behavior and medical notes, as well as owner surrender notes which show he lived mostly as an outside dog and possibly did not get much attention. The owner reported he was scared of loud noises, and did not like being leashed, although shelter staff found him non leash reactive as heard and seen in video. He was also seen being submissive to the other dog despite the owner saying he was bossy. Again, we suspect he was not around other dogs or people much, and maybe left mostly in a yard. He was given no vetting before sadly. If you are a rescue group and can help Bubba, please also contact the shelter asap and ask for Steissy the rescue coordinator there.
