(MAY CONSIDER A JRT-EXPERIENCED HOME) MEET PENELOPE (PENNY): A RESILIENT COMPANION Are you an experienced JRT handler looking for a loyal, intelligent, quiet, sweet JRT canine partner trying to work against her fears? Can you help her gain confidence? Are you patient? Meet Penelope affectionately known as Penny. A darling 5-year-old Jack Russell/Parsons Terrier mix who is ready to leave her fearful past behind. Found as a frightened stray by Contra Costa AC, Penny has spent the past few weeks decompressing in foster care. She is a resilient survivor with an immense desire to bond and connect with a dedicated owner. Careful & friendly, upon greeting. Unlike typical high-strung terriers, Penny is a quiet soul with a built-in 'off switch.' She is low-to-medium energy and simply needs a dedicated, knowledgeable guardian to help her blossom into the confident dog she was meant to be. DAILY LIFE & EXEMPLARY HOUSE MANNERS Penny is a sweet, respectful houseguest who brings incredible charm to a home. Her daily routine is orderly & peaceful: 100% Housebroken & Polite: She is non-destructive & sits politely during human mealtimes. Perfect for Remote Work: She is highly independent & loves to lounge quietly in a home office while you work. She is perfectly content being left home alone or baby-gated downstairs for up to 6 hours. Grooming & Routine Care: She enjoys gentle, thoughtful grooming sessions with a long plastic bristle brush while you watch TV. While initially fearful, she successfully let a kind vet tech trim her nails. Respects Boundaries: Penny is not a roamer; she prefers staying within the safety of her immediate area. Sophisticated Tastes: She thrives in a peaceful auditory environment. She genuinely enjoys classical music or upbeat jazz playing in the background while you are away. She is fine with the TV at normal decibel, normal conversation, ok with house sounds, vacuum, dryer, etc. but no chaotic noise. BEHAVIORAL PROFILE & HONEST HANDLER DISCLOSURE Penny is exceptionally intelligent, highly logical, & rationalizes her movements to maximize her benefit. Because she survived in a big world without protection, she is currently learning to balance submission & self-preservation. Her triggers are manageable for a confident handler who understands fear-based behavior & canine communication: Handling Sensitivity: Penny communicates discomfort subtly-by lowering her head, wincing, or bearing teeth with low growl. She is sensitive to hands moving directly over her head. During her post-spay recovery, she bared teeth when an E-collar was reattached over a raw hot spot on her neck. Her foster realized the collar caused needless pain, offered an alternative, and Penny immediately de-escalated & relaxed. She needs a handler who reads these signs as fear rather than malice. Resource Guarding: warns first, off & on. Guarded a ball, learning to share, still learning; guarded valued flavored hide bone. Her foster successfully de-escalated this using an 'exchange of value' (offering roasted chicken). She complied but communicated displeasure with low growl. She requires a handler with kind, fair, patient trade-offs. Training Style Needed: Penny requires sensible, thoughtful training. Knee-jerk reactionary corrections or traditional 'dominance' battles will only escalate her anxiety. She needs a guide who can teach her that she doesn't need to be hyper-vigilant. She isn't a dog for learning party tricks; she is a dog who needs guidance to live happily in a human home. She is not highly food-motivated, so high-value treats like chicken are required to hold her focus. IDEAL MATCH/HOUSEHOLD REQUIREMENTS To set Penny up for lifelong success, her new environment must meet these criteria: Adult-Only Sanctuary: A mature, quiet, secure home with no children, frequent visitors, or chaotic energy. She sleeps a lot! Other Pets? we don't know how she is with other animals, she is fearful (shakes), runs from other animals & dogs. Fenced Yard: A safe, securely fenced backyard where she can run and decompress. She is not built for high-pressure public walks, but learning! After some exercise/ball chasing/running she occasionally reverse sneezes if she overexerts herself. Our vet has fully examined this & confirmed it is harmless/typical & has become infrequent. MEDICAL/FINANCIAL SUPPORT-We believe in Penny completely. We would provide her lifelong home ourselves if we could afford consistent exercise, training & time, but we cannot. Because we want her to have the absolute best chance at life, her adoption comes with an extensive support package: Medical Clearance: Full bloodwork completed and clear. Fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, with county tags. Paid Preventatives: Her flea/tick/heartworm coverage is active. Penny's next 3-month dose of Simparica Trio is paid/included. Health Insurance: Penny's FETCH insurance policy PAID through 2026. Will you help her rehabilitate towards a happy, fear-free future?
