About Theo

Theo is a 9 year old purebred rough collie and retired medical service dog. He is a sweet boy, highly trainable and motivated to help, but prone to boredom if he doesn't have enough to occupy his brain. He tests positive for Lyme disease but shows no symptoms and his teeth are in bad shape, but other than that he is in fantastic health, particularly for his age. He had lepto over the spring but recovered remarkably well and has since been vaccinated against it. He has not been neutered but has never shown an interest in breeding. He is crate trained and prefers to eat & sleep in his crate with bottom latch unlocked - he lived through a house fire as a young dog and wants to be able to get out in an emergency but never escapes overnight. He's been professionally groomed his whole life and tolerates brushing but has very sensitive skin and needs it broken up into frequent short sessions. Theo is not at all shy and very very friendly. At 55 pounds he can sometimes overwhelm small children but has never shown aggression to any human or animal. We have multiple cats and he has never chased or barked at them. We recently took him to a summer camp we were teaching for kids ages 2-12, and Theo made friends with all the kids and parents. He loooves belly rubs and butt scritches and is happy outdoors in rain and snow. Theo was placed as a puppy with someone who needed mobility support and was trained to provide mobility assistance & various medical alerts. That person's symptoms deteriorated past what Theo could help with, plus they were no longer able to keep up with his grooming, so they rehomed him to another disabled person who was a friend of theirs. That person was also not able to keep up with his care, and asked my partner and myself to take him in, which we did this past January. We are both also disabled and also unable to keep up with his care. We are hoping to place Theo with someone who has room for him to run outside, time to spend on training & enrichment with him, and enough energy to brush him on a daily basis. We would like him to not have to change households again.
