About Cooper

Cooper is a 9 year old Catahoula/hound mix that we adopted from Texas 7 years ago. We now have 2 young kids and have realized Cooper would do best in a single dog home without children. This has been an extremely hard decision with a lot of heartache. Cooper twice attended the Mattox Dog Training academy for three month intensive obedience training courses. As a result, he is an extremely well mannered and behaved dog (especially for a breed of this energy level). Commands he has mastered: down, here, stay, sit, go to bed/spot, up/off, go potty. He is house trained, is well-mannered on a leash, and chews his own nails (although for his front paws he is trained to use a scratching board). He is crate trained, preferring to sleep in one, and treats this as his safe space. He can perform a few tricks: spin, roll over, up/down, touch. He is used to walking with a pinch collar, and is trained with a buzz collar as well, especially for off leash recall (although we almost always have it set to vibrate). He is a great guard dog and will give a woof when someone or something that shouldn't be in the yard is, but he doesn't lose his mind about it. Not a big barker. Cooper loves to snuggle his owners and trusted adult humans. As an older-ish dog, he loves to nap in the sun and go to bed early. That said, he has plenty of vigor left in him, and will still play like a puppy, whether it is a stick he found on his own or to chase a soccer ball around. He has a strong prey drive, and will happily rid his yard of small animals (rabbits, squirrels, rats, and the occasional bird). He does not eat what he kills, and does not bring the bodies inside. Despite a prey drive Cooper grew up with a cat in the home and respected her space, although she needed to remind him every once and a while He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. Aside from some minor plaque on his back teeth, he has a perfect bill of health from his vet as of a few months ago. Cooper has two triggers: 1) resource guarding and 2) personal space. If you are interested in Cooper about the ways we have managed these behaviors over our 7 years with him. If you are looking for an extremely loyal companion to add to your home and are interested in Cooper, we will be vetting homes for him. He is currently being fostered by some family.
