About Tosa

TOSA- 18 year-old 15.3 hand Thoroughbred mare- light riding (walking only) or companion/pasture pet. Tosa was surrendered to HRU in July 2026 when her owner of 14 years could no longer afford her. An off-the-track Thoroughbred, she spent 12 years in a program giving lessons to children and adults from beginners to 2'6' jumpers. Due to arthritis in her left front knee, Tosa is seeking a home where she is only lightly ridden (~1x a week) at a walk only to ensure she stays most comfortable. She has not experienced any lameness since joining HRU and is on a daily Equioxx pill to manage her arthritis. Tosa may have broken a knee bone while racing in her youth and it healed misaligned with osteoarthritis. Our farrier recommends that she wears corrective front shoes for any riding to give her added support. According to her last home, Tosa prefers to be the 'top mare' in turnout and is first to her food, but good with other horses. She is kid-safe under saddle and on the ground, an absolute pleasure to be around with good manners. Adopter must be located within a three (3) hour drive of Wall, NJ. Available for $200 with HRU's contract if approved. For more information, please email [email protected]. Find our adoption process and application at https://horserescueunited.org/Adopt
