About Xena

About a month ago, I rescued Xena from a construction site where she had clearly been abandoned. Before taking her in, I made every effort to locate an owner and followed the appropriate steps to reunite her with anyone who might have been looking for her. I chose not to take her to our local shelter because it is a high-intake, high-euthanasia facility, and I wanted to give her every possible chance at a good future. Xena is approximately one year old, spayed, has had her initial shots, weighs about 65 pounds, is healthy, and currently takes Simparica Trio. She has not been formally trained, but she is eager to learn and highly motivated by treats. In the month she has been with us, she has shown herself to be a very sweet, gentle, and timid dog. She has never bitten a person, another dog, or any other animal. She is house trained and sleeps in her own bed at night in the main bedroom. She lives inside the home and has done very well with our nine-year-old daughter. She is incredibly gentle with children, adjusts her behavior when my daughter walks her on leash, and has shown protective instincts without any signs of aggression. She has also been calm around toddlers. With other dogs, big and small, male or female, Xena is initially timid and cautious. She is not the dog that rushes into interactions but gradually warms up appropriately. Smaller dogs most often scare her and she cowers between my legs but she can make friends with repeat visitors (like a neighboring small dog). Around cats, she can peacefully coexist, although she will occasionally chase one if it suddenly runs. She has shown very little interest in our tortoise or chickens and is far more interested in chasing lizards than livestock. The primary challenge is separation anxiety. Xena has become very attached to my husband and prefers having someone home with her. When left alone, she will typically whine, cry, and sometimes chew her own toys or investigate items such as backpacks for approximately ten minutes before settling down with a high-value chew or treat. She does not soil the house, injure herself, or remain in a prolonged panic, but she clearly struggles with being left alone. We have been working on this ourselves through positive reinforcement and gradual training, and while there has been some progress, she would benefit from an experienced adopter who understands the breed and is prepared to continue building her confidence and independence.
