About Shelby

How We Found Shelby On November 30, my husband and I returned home to find a dog sitting on our front porch in the rain. After about an hour of earning her trust, we got her into our garage with food, water, and shelter. We immediately contacted animal control and local police to report her, but no missing dog had been reported. Animal control came the next day to scan for a microchip - she didn't have one. We kept her through Connecticut's 7-day stray hold, and when no one claimed her, she became ours to rehome and foster Medical History Shelby was first seen by a vet on December 6, weighing 47 pounds and in good health. She received her rabies vaccine at that visit. The vet estimated her age at 3-5 years and noted she had likely had at least one litter. On December 22 she received her DA2PP/Lepto vaccine, and she was spayed on March 3 at Nutmeg Spay Clinic with a smooth recovery. She is currently on Nexgard Plus for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. All vet and spay documentation is available. Shelby's Personality Shelby is an affectionate dog who loves cuddling, chewing bones, and going for walks. She warms up slowly to new people - she is cautious/reactive with strangers and trusts women more quickly than men - but once she feels safe, she is incredibly loving and wants to be right by your side. She lives with our dog and two cats. She is dog-friendly but gets very excited around other dogs. She has a prey drive, so we recommend a home without small pets. She does best with slow, low-pressure introductions done outdoors, without forced eye contact or petting until she initiates. Shelby sleeps in a crate every night and uses it throughout the day for naps when I need to run out - no fussing. She knows sit, down, turn, come, and her name. We've also been working on place, wait, stay, loose leash walking, e-collar basics, and muzzle training, all of which she's taken to well. Confidence boosting has been the root of our training. She has boarded with our dog trainer and does great in that environment too. It's clear she had little to no training before we found her, but she is a quick and willing learner. She is sensitive - she shies away from raised voices - so she responds best to positive reinforcement and a calm, gentle approach. We believe she was not well-treated in her previous life. Ideal Home Shelby would thrive with an experienced adopter familiar with rescues and her breed type, in a dog-only home. She deserves patience, consistency, and a gentle hand - and will give back endless love in return.
