About Millie

Millie is a joyful, energetic 1-year-old mixed breed who is looking for an active home that will continue helping her turn all that puppy enthusiasm into great manners. She is fully housebroken and crate trained, sleeps comfortably through the night in her crate, and even learned to sit and wait before leaving her crate or going through an outside door. She is very food motivated and has been making great progress with sit, down, place, wait, and recall using positive-reinforcement training. She is also incredibly polite at mealtime, patiently waiting for permission to eat, and has shown absolutely no food or toy resource guarding. Millie is comfortable with full-body handling and will allow items she shouldn't have to be gently removed from her mouth. Like many young dogs, however, she is curious and likes picking things up, so her new family will need to keep an eye on what she finds! In the home, Millie settles nicely and isn't much of a barker. She was unbothered by storms, delivery drivers, knocking, and people coming through the door. She also never tried to climb onto beds and generally preferred cuddling on her own dog bed or blankets. Outside the house is where Millie's adventurous side really shines-she LOVES walks and hiking in the woods! She has made great progress with leash walking but can still become excited or distracted, so continued training will be important. Millie is very dog friendly and enthusiastically wants to play with the dogs she meets. Her play style can be high-energy and a little socially awkward-lots of bouncing, pawing, and excited invitations to play-so a playful, tolerant canine companion would likely be her best match. Her experience with cats has been mixed. During her shelter evaluation, she was polite, easily redirected, and showed no predatory behavior toward the office cat. However, in her foster home, she wanted to chase a cat who ran from her and also enjoyed chasing small animals outside. Because of this newer information, a cat-free home may be the safest and easiest fit, particularly unless an adopter is experienced with very slow, carefully managed dog-cat introductions. Millie is still a young, exuberant dog and can become jumpy and mouthy/nippy when excited. Her foster family made progress through redirection and reward-based training, but her energy was overwhelming for the younger children in the home. She did much better with the teenager and responded especially well to confident, consistent handling. For that reason, Millie would be best suited to a home with teenagers or adults who are comfortable continuing her training and providing plenty of physical exercise, mental enrichment, and structure. Millie has so much potential. She is smart, affectionate, adventurous, dog friendly, housebroken, crate trained, highly trainable, and eager to be involved in whatever her people are doing. Her ideal family will appreciate that she is still very much a young dog who needs guidance while giving her plenty of opportunities to run, hike, learn, play, and explore. With consistency and continued positive-reinforcement training, Millie has all the ingredients to become an incredible companion-and she is ready to find the family who is the perfect match for her big, happy personality.
