MEET MAX : THE PERFECT GENTLEMAN WITH A HEART FULL OF LOVE. Location: Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, CA (Currently in Foster Care). Animal ID: IEPA-A-18834. Breed: German Shepherd Mix. Sex: Male. Age: 5 years, 3 months. Weight: 51 lbs. Intake Date: March 31, 2026. Some dogs want adventure. Some want a big backyard. Max mostly wants YOU. Max is a wonderful 5-year-old German Shepherd mix whose greatest joy is simply being close to the people he loves. Loyal, affectionate, calm, and incredibly sweet, Max is the kind of dog who will follow you from room to room, curl up beside you, and make everyday life feel a little less lonely. His foster family describes him perfectly: 'Max is the sweetest and most loyal boy! He's always by my side at home. He loves to be near his person and is very affectionate.' And Max has some wonderfully charming quirks: he likes company while he eats, sits with his legs crossed like a perfect gentleman, and loves playing chase in the yard. A WONDERFUL HOUSE DOG: Max is already housetrained and has excellent manners in the home. He is respectful indoors, greets visitors politely, and walks nicely on leash using a Gentle Leader. He already knows 'Sit' and 'Shake,' and he's smart and eager to continue learning. Despite being five years old, Max still has a playful, youthful side. He can enjoy some fun and then settle down and be the calm, affectionate companion who just wants to hang out with his family. DOG FRIENDLY & FAMILY FRIENDLY: Max has done well with other dogs while in foster care and has been gentle with a 4-year-old child. Because he sometimes forgets his size when he gets excited, however, older children may be the best match simply so he doesn't accidentally knock over a little one. No cats for Max, please. MAX NEEDS CONNECTION: There is something especially important to understand about this sweet boy: Max bonds deeply with his people. He loves affection, reassurance, companionship, and simply knowing his person is nearby. His ideal adopter would be someone who is home often or who can make Max part of their everyday life. Working from home? Retired? Homebody? Looking for a dog who genuinely wants to share life with you? Max may be your guy. When Max first arrived in foster care from the shelter, he needed some time to decompress and feel secure. He was underweight and initially wasn't interested in eating. His foster family gave him patience, stability, and love-and little by little, the real Max emerged. And what emerged was a loving, loyal, affectionate dog who simply needed to know he was safe. His future family should be willing to give him that same patience while he adjusts to another new home. Give Max a little time to trust you, and you may find yourself with one extraordinarily devoted best friend. WHY MAX IS SO SPECIAL: Affectionate & loving. Loyal companion. Lap dog at heart. Housetrained. Good with dogs. Good with children. Walks nicely on leash. Knows basic commands. Calm companion. Social butterfly. Smart & eager to learn. Playful, youthful personality. Great potential for a first-time dog owner. Staff favorite. Volunteer favorite. No cats. At 5 years old, Max has a beautiful combination: he's past the puppy chaos but still has plenty of playfulness and life ahead of him. He doesn't need perfection. He needs someone who will give him a little time to settle in, include him in their life, and let him become what he most wants to be: your dog. Your shadow. Your loyal best friend.
