Meet Howell! ժ This handsome seven-year-old gray boy has been through more than most cats should ever have to endure, yet he continues to show us just how resilient and loving a cat can be. Howell came to us from the euthanasia list at a local open-admission shelter that simply ran out of space. We don't blame them-we understand the difficult decisions they face every day. We're just incredibly grateful we were able to change the course of Howell's life. When he arrived, both of his eyes had ruptured corneas. It was one of the most heartbreaking things we've ever seen. They looked like bright red meatballs. We've cared for many cats with severe eye injuries over the years, and we knew there was a good chance Howell's eyes could heal with time and proper treatment. Cats truly are amazing. One of Howell's eyes recovered so well that he regained full vision and it now looks remarkably normal. His other eye is non-functional, but after consulting with multiple veterinarians, we learned it wasn't causing him pain and removing it would have been cosmetic rather than medically necessary. We chose to let Howell keep his eye, and he gets around beautifully. He's a gentle soul who can be a little shy at first and may let out an occasional grumble when he's feeling unsure. It's all bark and no bite. In fact, at his most recent veterinary visit, the staff couldn't stop talking about what a sweetheart he is. Howell really enjoys the company of other cats and seems to gain confidence from having feline friends around him. We think he'd thrive in a home with another friendly cat or with patient people who will give him the time he needs to settle in. He's definitely food motivated, and the quickest way to Howell's heart is through his stomach. Treats and mealtime are some of his favorite parts of the day! As an added bonus, Howell recently enjoyed a little spa day-a dental cleaning, scaling and polishing, along with a few tooth extractions. He's feeling great and is ready to start the next chapter of his life with a family who will love him just as much as we do.
