About JAX

Adoption Fee: $450
Shih Tzu
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

JAX is a 5-year-old, 14.8 Shih Tzu who was surrendered to us because his owner didn't have time for him. Full disclosure: this cutie has been adopted and returned twice. The first return helped us discover that he has separation anxiety and needs a home where someone is around most of the time. The second occurred because his potty routine wasn't followed, despite it being clearly explained. We share this because we want his next adoption to be his forever one. His foster families have absolutely adored him and any issues are easily managed. JAX is an incredibly loving, loyal little companion who just needs a family willing to understand his needs. JAX is sweet and loves people. He is friendly with everyone he meets, and quickly becomes your little shadow, following you from room to room. He enjoys being held, loves pets and cuddles, and wants to be right next to his person whenever possible. Because he has some separation anxiety, JAX is looking for a home where someone is home most of the time or where he won't be left alone for long workdays. JAX is very good with other small dogs and must have another dog in his forever home. He isn't overly interested in playing, but he enjoys their companionship and is happiest having a canine friend nearby. A home with cats or chickens or hamsters or guinea pigs or birds, etc., is not his best fit. He would likely do well with older kids. JAX is doing well with house training, but it is very important that his future family understands what he needs to be successful. He will not simply let himself out into the yard. He wants his person to go outside with him for potty breaks and does best when someone walks out with him and gives him the time he needs. Like many dogs adjusting to a new home, he may mark indoors during the first week or two while he settles into his new routine, so belly bands are recommended during this transition. Once he feels secure and understands the routine, he does very well. JAX enjoys spending time outside with his family, exploring and running around. While he walks well on a leash, a secure fenced yard is required because his prey drive means he may take off if he sees something that gets his attention. He hasn't figured out pet stairs, so his family will need to help him onto the couch or bed when he wants to cuddle. He's a good eater, although he can be a little picky about treats, and toys don't seem to interest him very much. At bedtime, you'll find JAX happily snuggled up in the big bed with his family. JAX is neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *To meet or adopt one of our dogs, you must first submit an adoption application for review.
