April is a loving, playful 7-year-old beagle mix who has been part of our family since she was 8 weeks old. DNA testing identified her as 65% beagle, 20% pug, and 15% other hound, although her jet-black coat makes her look more like a small Labrador. She weighs about 35-40 pounds, is microchipped, vaccinated, and has received regular veterinary care through Banfield Pet Hospital throughout her life. April has been especially protective of our daughter and granddaughter, remaining close to our daughter during pregnancy and watching over our granddaughter since birth. She loves tummy rubs, treats, scrambled eggs, small amounts of sweet potato, running, playing, and visiting dog parks. She is highly food-motivated, sleeps in her crate at night, and has never been mean or intentionally aggressive. Like many beagles, April is energetic, strong, scent-driven, stubborn, and easily bored. She pulls on walks, may dig under fences, can jump from high places, and occasionally escapes to explore the neighborhood. She barks at some dogs, delivery workers, fireworks, and other unfamiliar sounds and howls when she hears sirens. She may steal unattended food or try to take food from a child's hand, so supervision and continued training are important. April experiences significant anxiety during veterinary visits and grooming. She requires trazodone before veterinary examinations and may need a muzzle for nail trimming. Because she once nipped a groomer while frightened, she is currently bathed at home rather than in a grooming salon. She also has a sensitive stomach and does best with a meat-focused diet; foods containing chicken, rice, or vegetable mixtures have caused digestive problems. Our family loves April deeply, but we are selling our home. Our adult children are moving into apartments that are not suitable for a high-energy beagle, and my husband and I are relocating out of state. We are seeking an experienced, patient foster or permanent home where April will receive exercise, structure, affection, secure fencing, and understanding of her anxiety and beagle instincts. She is available for immediate placement.
