https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaywrBwhKum/ Another tragic story and an all-too-common tale. This handsome boy came to the South LA shelter less than three weeks ago as a stray dog. After only 2 weeks, staff placed him on the euthanasia list for in-kennel behavior towards staff (growling, barking, and baring teeth when staff was outside his kennel door). Notably, the last time staff reported this behavior, they noted that BIG MACK had stopped short of the front of the kennel, went into a rigid posture, and then actually peed on himself. ���� When we first met BIG MACK for his playgroup assessment, he was scared and defensive in his kennel (barking, growling, and showing teeth). But he came forward for treats and, once leashed, walked out of his kennel quietly and eagerly. During this assessment, he was stiff and avoided other dogs (quickly walking away when a dog approached him) but, by the very next day, BIG MACK showed notable improvement with bouts of play and mingling with others. During the week that followed, BIG MACK continued to make big strides with his handlers. Sadly, it doesn't seem to matter how much this sweet boy has opened up with other dogs and humans. He has been defined solely by behavior while trapped inside his shelter cage and by people who never actually handle him or take him out. What this lovable boy needs is a responsible owner and supportive home environment where BIG MACK can feel safe and continue the good progress he has made with his handlers in the short time he has been at the shelter.
