HEALDSBURG/SONOMA COUNTY (WINE COUNTRY), CA in NOR CALIFORNIA- 4 YR AFFECTIONATE FEMALE 40 LB CHOW X 'SONOMA' IN NEED OF A LOVING, FOREVER HOME, previously SAVED FROM A SHELTER WHERE SHE WAS FACING EUTHANASIA. OWNER UNFORTUNATELY CANNOT KEEP DUE TO NOT GETTING ALONG W OLDER DOG IN HOME (please no negative comments, owner is at least asking for help to rehome) Please help us find a loving, forever home for this petite girl fondly named Sonoma who is perfectly sized and has a beautiful deep red coat. Estimated to be turning 4 years old, Sonoma was saved from a S Cal shelter in 2024 after the current owner saw her post and had a similar looking chow mix of the opposite sex, and drove hundreds of miles to save her. While Sonoma was fine at the shelter with other dogs, and has done okay with other dogs outside their home as well, unfortunately, in time, the owners found the two dogs just do not get along inside the home. Now with an infant also in the home, the situation can no longer easily managed to keep the two dogs separated and safe and they are hoping to find her a loving home where she will thrive. Her current owner has many great things to say about her as follows: 'Sonoma is very affectionate with her family. She is very attached to us and wants to go everywhere and do everything with her people! Her favorite thing is to stand crosswise in front of you, looking up batting her beautiful brown eyes to ask for pets. She is very communicative and will politely let you know with a gentle snoot boop when it is time for a meal, walk, or just some attention. She loves walks and outdoor time. Once she makes room for you in her heart, Sonoma is a total sweetheart. We absolutely love Sonoma and deciding to rehome her is a painful decision, but we feel it is necessary for both our dogs' well being.' They further noted, 'After she got comfortable and bonded with us, she is friendly with people in our household. She is now strongly attached to us and is defensive toward strangers. The defensiveness is much stronger when in our home or yard. She did well being watched by a friend at their home. We've been told she gets along with other dogs when boarded. Six months ago we were matched for a newborn infant adoption and she has been very good with our child since day one. We have not allowed her around other young children. She did well with middle-school aged children at a friend's home who has experience with defensive dogs.' They also explained that while there has never been an actual bite, Sonoma 'has nipped limbs to try to herd. Training and familiarity/attachment dramatically reduced her nippiness with us at home. However, she is very defensive with new people in our home and yard and the nippiness returns. She is very defensive with strangers and has herding breed behaviors that she struggles to control when excited. Despite extensive training, she also has difficulty controlling her herding instincts and impulses, which causes discomfort with guests in our home. 'The owner mentioned she can be somewhat defensive as can be typical of her breeds which include Chow chow (57%), Australian Cattle Dog (17%), Siberian Husky (8%), German Shepard (5%), Samoyed (4%), and 5 others. While Sonoma seems to be fine outside a home with other dogs, inside a home, she seems to get competitive with their other dog over both attention and food. Therefore, the owners feel Sonoma is best as an only dog, and no young children recommended. Sonoma has lived as an indoor dog, potty trained, and is already spayed and current on her vaccinations. She has no medical issues or reported bites to people or other animals, but does have some noted nipping incidents. Therefore, the owners want to ensure that her next home is prepared to be her forever home and equipped to handle her challenges. Someone experienced more with herding breeds may be an ideal home. If you are interested in meeting and adopting this sweet, young beauty, please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is assisting the owner with her placement. Chow or herding dog experience is preferred.
