About Rhett

We have a unique situation, my husband has a new job which will have our family traveling full time for 2.5 years. I adore my dog but he would be miserable traveling. We want to retain ownership of him and are seeking a foster/temporary home. I adopted Rhett as a stray from the shelter in September of 2018. Rhett is a true hound, laid back inside, not interested in toys or playing like most dogs. However outside he loves to roam, smell, and bay at things. We have three small kids and he is okay being with kids a little but is wary of them. We keep him separated from them the majority of the time which he has never minded because he sleeps the majority of the day. For this reason I would say only a home with older kids or no kids. He is not safe with cats, small dogs, and small creatures. He needs a large yard or farm. He has lived the majority of his life with me on the farm around horses, cows, and goats. He does excellent with an in ground electric fence. Otherwise would need a fence or supervision with his E collar on. With just a remote E collar once he learns his boundaries he is pretty good about staying where he's supposed to be but can be tempted by chasing a bunny or squirrel. He knows very basic commands. He comes when called but can be stubborn when determined on a scent- hence the E collar. He responds to the beep function on the collar and has rarely needed more. Rhett is sweet but not super affectionate with everyone. He's somewhat like a cat that way, he likes some attention but not all the time. He's good with other large dogs and tends to be laid back and not want to rough house. He was skin and bones when he came to the shelter and had been a stray for a while, because of his past he does still have some mild resource guarding. We just make sure he has some space from other dogs when its meal time and he does fine. He has also been known to snag food from the counter or table if left out. He knows he's not supposed to but it just seems that part of his past being starving hasn't escaped him. He's been a very healthy dog for us, nothing major. It seems like at some point he might have had some injuries to his legs. As a result he has some wonky alignment and mild arthritis. He takes Cosequin every day for his joints to keep him comfortable. Like I said, I intend to keep him, which means I'm willing to pay for his expenses. Finding the perfect home for him is a very high priority for me.
