I found Mara dumped on the side of a rural road in the middle of a heat wave. She had recently had puppies and was very malnourished. Understandably, she was shy and scared, but she let me pet her and pick her up to put in my car. Despite how I found her, this pup has given me nothing but happiness and love! She is still quite shy at first when meeting someone, but warms up and wants lots of head scratches and belly rubs. The first thing I hear when I wake up in the morning is her tail wagging! As Mara has become more comfortable, it is clear that has a pretty calm energy. She is truly a very polite dog. She will take treats from your hands so delicately- zero snatching!- and even her excited wiggles are gentle. She's not a jumper or a barker. She is both crate and house-trained and walks well on a leash. With other animals, she is very shy and doesn't want much interaction (she is scared of my cat!), but does not show any aggression. We have had unleashed dogs run up to us in excitement and some definite chaotic energy, and again, while she doesn't love it, she weathers it with resignation. I have not had a chance to see her reaction to children, but I think it would be similar. I don't think she has had a lot of interaction with animals or people, so this may change over time as she builds confidence and comes out of her shell. However, I think an owner who stands up for her and keeps her feeling safe will be hugely helpful (i.e. not letting really pushy dogs sniff her aggressively, because she doesn't like it but won't correct them herself). I already see a lot of positive changes in her- she's excited to go for walks and jumps in and out of my car on her own when before I had to pick her up and put her down. She always has her crate open as a safe space for her to go, but she lays on the rug next to me when I'm sitting and follows me around the house with a happy wiggle, full of curiosity. When it comes to food, Mara is very food-motivated and treats and food puzzles go a long way in making her comfortable and keeping her entertained. However, as I mentioned before, she shows zero food aggression; I can pet her or take her food away while she's eating, even though I know this skinny girl is hungry! She will even come ask for pets before chowing down on her meal. We are currently working on learning some commands to build trust and communicate, but she already listens very well! Mara is a sweet dog and great companion and will make a great addition to your family.
