About Haywood

Shih Tzu mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Haywood !! This tiny sweetheart was left at the shelter in awful condition. He was severely matted all over and covered in fleas. He smelled awful. Amy at Pawpular Pets once again came in on her day off and donated her time to groom him. She's sooooo amazing!! And he's a whole new dog now!! Haywood is an approx 1 year old male, shih tzu mix. He weighs 9 pounds and is full grown. He will be neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of his adoption. He is thankfully heartworm negative. This poor guy was neglected for so long and then left at the shelter. He was understandably terrified. He was growly at the shelter but once out of the kennel he started soaking up the love. When we brought him into foster he relaxed and turned into a happy friendly boy. He does take just a little time to adjust to new people to make sure that they are safe but after that, he is your best friend. Haywood is doing really well with his house manners so far. He is great about crate training. He uses it as a safe space and will hide in there when he's afraid of new people in the home. He has not been vocal when crated aside from occasional barking when someone enters the home. He sleeps in his kennel overnight without any issues. He has done great so far with his potty training. He is not super familiar with the leash. He's not terrible, but he gets a little afraid and will pull/run at the end of it for a minute before going belly up for you to rub him. We think with just a little more practice he's going to figure it out quickly. He is excellent for car rides both in your lap or in a kennel. Haywood does well with other dogs. He has been around all sizes of dogs since coming into the rescue from tiny to giant. He will give a growl if they are too much for him but aside from that he's done very well. He would also be fine without other dogs in the home. We are not sure how he would do with cats, but he would probably do just fine. He would need to be with older kids that are respectful and don't treat him like a toy. He has a lower energy level so far, but he might become more playful once he is fully settled and comfortable. He has no trouble being crated while you're at work for the day or overnight. Once adjusted to you he likes to be with you and cuddle. He's a fairly easy-going guy. Haywood has shown no issues sharing treats, toys or food with other people. He takes treats gently. He has been fed separately from any other animals so we aren't sure how he would do sharing his food with them. We think someone is going to get very lucky adopting this little guy. If you don't mind giving him just a little time to adjust to you and feel safe, he becomes the sweetest easy-going boy. |%8F|%8FHe will need regular grooming. This requires time to get him to and from the appointments and additional expenses to pay for it. On average a dog of this breed will need grooming every 6 weeks. This should be fully considered prior to applying to adopt him.|%8F|%8F Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA.
