SAN DIEGO COUNTY/ OCEANSIDE, CA (S CAL)- ID #941607 AT SAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY- Oceanside campus X-URGENT -MAJESTIC PUREBRED CHOW BOY 'JUDE' IN NEED OF A LOVING, CHOW SAVVY RESPONSIBLE HOME, OR FOSTER AND RESCUE ASAP - WHO CAN HELP? SWEET, OK W MOST DOGS, CALM KIDS, POSSIBLY CATS Please help us find a good home or foster and rescue for this stunning male chow who is about 4 years old and weighs only 47 lbs, and just had entropion surgery to fix his right eye. Jude was unfortunately surrendered by his owner for financial reasons, along with a second chow, after living in the same home most of their lives. The shelter let us know, 'We are not requiring them to be adopted together and feel they would do ok in separate homes. 'The owner stated that they are great with kids and coexisted well with the two cats in the home. They are playful with each other but can be shy with other dogs. Jude did not get along with the other male dog in the home and get into an altercation once and then was kept separated. Outside the home they may try to hide behind owner on walks when seeing other dogs. They are housetrained and know sit, lay down, and paw.' Per the shelter bio, 'Jude is a charming guy who enjoys his walks and likes to do things on his own terms-more like a cat than a dog! He appreciates having his space respected and may take some time to feel comfortable with new people. The best way to build a relationship with Jude is to let him approach when he's ready and allow him to move away if he needs a break. Jude would thrive in a calm, patient home that can keep his world small while he settles in. Think quiet walks, cozy naps, and plenty of time to adjust. He may benefit from a Fear Free veterinarian and gentle, reward-based handling for any future grooming needs. With patience and understanding, Jude is sure to become a wonderful companion and loyal friend.' We were further told, with new people, they are more comfortable meeting them outside of the home as they can be protective of their space. Lila may take a few visits to warm up, and Jude will bark excessively and has a more difficult time warming up. He is also more sensitive to handling - does not like being brushed, has a difficult time being bathed, and usually needs to be sedated or muzzled at the vet. We performed entropion surgery on Jude's right eye on 6/12. He also has grade 2 dental disease. They were also originally kenneled together, but seemed to have some resource guarding of food so they were separated. May growl at one another over food but has not escalated past vocalizing. If you have another dog in the home, or decide to also adopt the other, we recommend feeding them separately. Both dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and already spayed or neutered and ready to go home. The adoption fee is only $165. To adopt either dog , or both, or if you have additional questions, please call 619-299-7012 or email [email protected]. If you need further help or can foster for a rescue, please also contact: [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist the shelter with their placement.
