About LUKE

Dutch Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Hello,My name is Titus, and I am reaching out regarding our 2-year-old German Shepherd, Luke. We are located in Irvine, California, and are looking for guidance regarding a serious behavioral incident that occurred recently.Luke has been with us since he was a puppy and is deeply loved. Over the last two years, we have invested heavily in professional training and behavior work. He completed an 8-week board-and-train program with The Doggie Doggo in La Habra and has continued ongoing training through private lessons, virtual coaching, and training with Sit Means Sit in Huntington Beach.Luke is highly intelligent, obedient, and extremely bonded to me. However, he has always struggled with stranger reactivity, protectiveness, and suspicion of unfamiliar people. We have worked diligently to manage these behaviors and felt we were making progress.Unfortunately, a serious incident occurred recently involving my wife. As part of Luke's normal routine, he was waiting in a place command before being released to his crate where a food-filled toy was waiting. My wife reached toward his neck to remove his e-collar before releasing him, and Luke reacted by biting her. The bite resulted in multiple puncture wounds, and during the incident he also attempted to bite toward her neck. She received medical treatment and is recovering. This incident has left us devastated. We love Luke very much, but we also recognize our responsibility to keep our family safe. We are trying to understand what responsible options may exist for him and whether there are resources, evaluations, foster programs, behavioral rehabilitation options, or other avenues that your organization may be aware of.We are committed to being completely transparent about his history and the severity of this incident. We are not looking to simply surrender him and walk away. We want to do everything we can to make sure that any decisions made are responsible, ethical, and in Luke's best interests while also protecting the safety of others. If your organization is unable to assist directly, we would greatly appreciate any referrals or recommendations for experienced German Shepherd rescues, behavior specialists, or placement resources that may be able to help.Thank you for your time and consideration.Sincerely,Titus and Joelle Irvine, California
