About Ike

Ike is a 2-year-old neutered Chocolate Lab/Pointer mix who is truly an incredible dog looking for a family of his own. This handsome boy is intelligent, affectionate, eager to please, and absolutely thrives on human companionship. Ike is very people-oriented and forms strong bonds with his handlers. If you're looking for a dog that wants to be involved in every part of your day, Ike is ready to sign up for the job! Ike already has an impressive training foundation and knows sit, stay, come/here, heel, and focus. He is highly motivated by praise and treats and loves learning new things. He can even catch treats right out of the air! His future family may want to continue working on taking treats more gently, as his enthusiasm can occasionally get ahead of him. One thing that quickly stands out about Ike is how incredibly well-mannered he is in the home. He is extremely potty trained and keeps his kennel exceptionally clean. Ike clearly understands that outside is the place to do his business and has shown excellent house-training habits. When out on walks or adventures, Ike can be very vocal and animated when he sees other people or dogs. While it may look intense at first glance, Ike is simply alerting his handler that he sees someone and is excited about the possibility of making a new friend. Once introduced, he does wonderfully with other dogs and genuinely enjoys social interactions. Ike's cat test was equally impressive. When introduced to a cat, he politely approached to investigate. The cat quickly swatted him several times across the face, causing Ike to immediately whine and look to his handler for reassurance that everything was okay. After that brief interaction, he completely ignored the cat and went about his business, showing no desire to chase or bother her. His dog-to-dog interactions are entertaining to watch. Ike eagerly approaches other dogs to greet, sniff, and play. However, his Pointer nose often takes over! If he catches an interesting scent, he'll happily leave his canine friends behind to investigate. Once he satisfies his curiosity, he's right back to playing as if nothing happened. Ike has also demonstrated excellent behavior around children. During testing with two boys, ages 6 and 7, he had an absolute blast. When they ran, played, and squealed with excitement, Ike simply ran alongside them enjoying every second of the fun. He occasionally offered a gentle jump during play, but nothing the boys couldn't easily handle. His enthusiasm matched theirs perfectly. When introduced to an 85-year-old woman, Ike adjusted his behavior beautifully. He approached her gently and displayed a submissive, respectful demeanor. During a playful moment, he did attempt to jump up once, but after being told 'no' and asked to sit, he immediately complied and did not repeat the behavior. Resource guarding is not a concern for Ike. He happily allows people to handle his food, treats, toys, and other possessions without issue. He is trusting, cooperative, and comfortable sharing his space and belongings with people. Ike would do best with an active family or individual who can provide consistent structure and leadership. He responds very well to confident handling and appreciates clear direction. Most importantly, Ike desperately needs to leave the shelter environment. He is a social, people-loving dog who thrives on interaction and companionship, and kennel life is becoming increasingly difficult for him. He has so much love, intelligence, and potential to offer; he simply needs someone willing to give him the chance.
